Can someone tell me the difference between RNY-distal and RNY-proxmil. I know it has something to do with the amount of small intestine that is by-passed but does anyone know the exact amounts? My Dr told me he by-passed 150 (cm ??) is this distal or proxmil??

Hi Sue I think anything more than 100cm is distal Dawn

From what I understand, the folks who have distal have more malabsorption, and therefore greater weight loss (by percentage). Hope this helps Diana

Hi Sue: I had 100 cm bypassed and was told by my surgeon's office that it was considered "proximal". -Angela

There are varying answers on this, depending on who you ask. I had Dr. Richardson as my surgeon; he explained it to me like this: I have 150cm bypassed, that borders on the technical definition of a distal, but he lists me as a proximal, as most distals have much more bypassed. So chances are, you're a proximal. Now to add more confusion, there is also something called a medial - which, is in between. So perhaps we're more medial with 150cm bypassed.
