Topic: Aches and pains
It's the oddest thing. Started a few days ago. It comes and goes but usually is very present by the end of the day. It's the mid back region, not lower, on the right side. And the thing it, it doesn't feel like muscle ache, it's a different sort of ache but is not severe...
On top of that, my muscles are aching and groaning, particularly in the morning. I feel ancient.
I'm wondering if the muscle aches, or the back pain (which is separate and different) are signs of anything I should be worried about. Neither is debilitating and I'm just worrying, probably for nothing.
Anyone else experiencing something similar?

Hi Patti!
I agree with you...I haven't found a protein drink that I can stand, either! I just went to the Unjury website and they have a phone number you can call to order. I called and asked if they had samples they could send so I wouldnt have to waste money on a mix that I might not use. The guy I talked to was very nice and said they did send samples. So you might want to contact them and try them first before buying a large quantity. Good Luck!

Topic: RE: I am still hungry after surgery!?!?!?!?
Before anyone pushes the panic button, I'd try adjusting the diet first. I'm six weeks post op and this week I've felt like I'm starving on a daily basis. I put a lot of time into over analyzing my issues and problems and paying attention to details and this is what I've found.
This weeks diet (for me) consisted of more carbs than I'd had in the past. The carbs can make me feel a quick fullness (ie. I eat x amount, feel full, but then half an hour later, I'm raiding the kitchen again).
Another thing to consider is hormones. I get hungrier during the pre-menstrual week to ten days and that's what time of month it is. Perhaps your cycles are similar? Or maybe for you it's post-menstrual? It's at least something to consider. I wouldn't expect this to change with the surgery.
What I'm trying to do is to make sure I'm getting enough proteins and always keeping my drink at hand. If you feel hungry, eat something, but make it a protein based food. I think we need to remember that as time goes on we WILL be able to eat a bit more at one sitting. I'm not saying it's ok to binge or overeat, but my diet says that at six weeks I can increase my liquid and food intake (per serving) and this has helped somewhat with the hunger. I just needed a bit more.
Anyway, I'm rambling on and on but my point is this: Don't over react or panic. I think feeling hunger is natural. Consider how little you are actually eating and how much of an adjustment this is for your body. Feeling hungry, to me, has been associated with recovery. I assumed it was a healthy sign. My hunger pains aren't severe or overwhelming. If they are for you, then maybe there is some underlying problem that needs to be addressed and you should always discuss things with your doctor. But if it's just a normal sort of hunger, I'd try to see if your diet and lifestyle can compensate a little.
You are human first and WLS patients second. It's ok to feel human and want to eat from time to time. Double check your diet, try some new foods or combinations, everyone is different and maybe you just need some fine tuning to conquer that hunger.

I can't tolerate the protein drinks either. The smell, taste, consistency, all make me feel nauseous.
I've been using Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast Drinks. I mix them with Skim Milk so that the one cup has 12 grams as protein. Granted, that's half of what a protein shake offers but trust me, the flavor is worth it. I wouldn't trade them for world. I drink 2 cups a day, and then supplement protein with other sources. Cottage cheese is a fantastic source, about 12 grams for 1/2 cup. Egg whites, beans, make some hummus! It's great tasting, rich in protein, and can be used as a spread. I've also found that I can tolerate fish well, so I have a little bit every day. Between those items as well as things like yogurt and milk, I've been managing to take in about 50+ grams of protein per day. Yesterday, a walloping 63 grams!
I've found that staying away from all the 'fad' foods and drinks works best for me. I am trying to eat healthy as well as 'naturally', and finding that I'm able to tolerate much more that way.

You guys... I want to just hug you all. My surgery date was July 31st. I'm six weeks + post op, down 31 or 32 pounds, and frustrated. It's very difficult to not compare yourself to everyone else. But what you all have posted is incredibly true! We are all different. I do believe that exercise makes the BIG difference and I sure do need to get out and do more. I can't argue with that. I'm walking, but only about three nights a week. That's about to change. Measuring inches can be a great ego boost as well. On weeks when you don't lost pounds, you might notice that the inches are still melting away. Unfortunately, I never took my measurements pre-op because I didn't want to know. I guess I can start now. Better late than never, right?
Keep your chins up and hang in there! WE are going to be success stories too.

I know EXACTLY what you mean! My surgery was on July 14, and I started out at 302.5 lbs. I am down 43 lbs. now (259 lbs.) and it is slow going. Don't get me wrong. If it hadn't been for this surgery I could never have done this. My will power is strong only because I know what could happen if I eat the foods I want to. I know not to cheat. But, it is hard to see my friends eating a carmel pie, and I can do nothing but catch my drool as I watch. It is a struggle, but we all can do it! Stay on target, for the weight is coming off. Don't forget, the more you work out, the more muscle you build, and muscle weighs more then fat. Check you measurements to see if you've lost inches, not just weight.

Hi Stacey, Thanks for a great post. I am feeling a bit frusterated with my slow weight loss. According to my dietician I am average but it sure doesnt feel average, feels slow. I am 8.5 weeks out and have lost about 33 pounds. I started at 234 and am 5'2. I go weeks without a ounce lost. I have recently started at Curves and hopes that changes everything. I try so hard to keep a positive attitude but sometimes it is hard. Thanks again!
Topic: Slow weight loss
Hi! Currently I am 9 weeks post op and down 44 pounds. To those who have had the surgery this is a great accomplishment. Even for myself. But for those who have not or ar recent post ops, I wanted to drop them this line so they do not get frustrated like myself. When I first started reading people's profiles I was amazed at how fast the weight came off and how well they were doing. Well not mine, the process seems to be going a lot slower. Although I would have never lost this much weight in fact maybe any weight if it wasn't for the surgery. Anyhow, you have to remember that everyones body is different so we lose differently. It will come off if you follow the right advice it just takes time. Be patient, it will be gone before you know it. Also people start at different weights. I was 270 when I had the surgery and I am 5'4". For the past 3 weeks I have been going to the gym and finally I have encorporated 2 spin classes and a kick boxing class for the 3 days I go a week. I want to go at least 5 but with going back to work after the surgery and being off for 2 months was a little more difficult then I thought. I am also single so I have been going out at least 4 nights a week. Eventually I will make it there and reach my goals. I know that. We are fortunate to have this tool and I plan on using it wisely. Good luck and if you have any questions that I may be able to help you with please feel free to respond.

Have you tried Unjury protein powder. They make chocolate, vanilla and unflavored. I could not tolerate any protein shake till I tried teh chocolate one. It tastes just like chocolate milk and mixed with 6 ounces of skim milk gives you 26 grams of protein. I love it! www.unjury.com I believe they have a money back guarentee. Good luck!
Topic: Yucky protein shakes!
Hi, I had RNY on 7/16/03, just wondering if anyone else is unable to drink the protein shakes? I get extreme nausea and have even broken out in hives when I drink these. Tried the Protein bars and just experienced the nausea with them. So, at this point I am just trying to get as much protein through peanut butter, cheese, etc., but I know I'm not getting enough. Any suggestions? Tired of wasting money on things that I can't eat.
