The struggle over meat...

It's been *almost* 3 months since my surgery, I have a few days left to hit that milestone, on the 31st. I'm down *almost* 50 pounds, and my short term goal is to hit that 50 pound mark by the end of this coming week. What I'm curious to hear from you all is how well you are tolerating meat. It seems that no matter what I try, or how little I take in, any sort of meat (chicken, turkey, beef, ground beef, pork) makes me ill. Maybe there's some trick or secret to eating it that I haven't yet discovered. There are times when I can tolerate very tender chicken, and fish seems to be ok so long as it's very tender and fresh, but otherwise, and most times, it turns out to be a negative experience. So naturally I grow concerned about 'protein' intake and I try to get enough via skim milk, carnation breakfast drinks, cheese, yogurt, etc, but I miss being able to sit down to dinner and have a bit of what everyone else is eating without making a scene after a few bites over how I feel =( Any suggestions on what works for you all? Anyone else having this same issue? I'd appreciate any feedback you can give. Thanks!

I wish I could be more optimistic. I eat meat and feels like it sits right under my chin for hours. I try it, and usually decide that I will check back in a week or two and see it goes any better. What I have added to agment the protein is yogurt. I eat about four 6 oz. cartons of sugar-free, fat free yogurt every day with 9 grams of protein per carton. I had my 12 week checkup with my surgeon on Thursday. I am down 77 pounds, a little over half way from 342 to the 195-200 range B-12 levels are low and I got an injection. The low meat diet I can live without. The B-12 derived from meat consumption is another thing altogether. I still avoid large meat-ladened meals. Thursday was a business dinner at the home of an Amish family. I declined the invitation, given it hurts watching people pig our for an hour and half. It also makes people uncomfortable dabbling in the food, and mainly play the role of spectator. Some people will tel you that you have got it easy with WLS, that you lose weight and it costs you nothing. As you and I are finding, the costs are subtle but costly nonetheless. Hang on. It will get better, but it will never be the same (thankfully)

Hi, I had WLS, the RNY on July 15, 2003 and I cannot eat chicken, turkey, eggs, lettuce, cabbabge etc.) Keep trying them every 10 days or so, I have tried finely scrammbled hamburger mixed with spaghetti sauce and can eat a small amount of that, but that is it for meat. I've tried some tuna, but I have to add so much mayo, then it is to heavy in my stomach. Refried beans, vegetable soups, protein bars, cottage cheese, crackers, tortia chips, dried fruits are some of my staples at this point. Down 58 pounds. Good luck, hope the meat thing changes in time for all of us.

I have the same problem! Why don't you try ground beef with chili powder garlic powder and onion powder. i would say use taco seasoning but it has carbs in it and that's not where I want to get mine from! Anyway FINELY shred some lettuce. Chop some tomato (just the outside no seeds and a bit of finely chopped green pepper.) Mix that all together and add just a tiny bit of plain yogurt. That's the only way I can eat meat. If the chuncks of meat are too big, pulse just the cooked meat in a food processor. Like I said that's the only kind of meat I can do. It's yummy too. Fell free to email me and I can send you some recipes I have. Annie

Hi Mary, I'm sorry you're struggling with meat. I'm constantly amazed at the few problems I have with protien. I can eat any kind of "hard" meat like steak, pork chops, roast, ham. What I have difficulty with is canned tuna, chicken or turkey, eggs and fish. Doesn't make sense, but it's what stays down and it seems to be working. I had surgery on 7/3 and as of 10/27 was down 94#'s. I can eat all vegetables and fruits as well. Have only tried bread 3 x's but it went OK also. I do throw up on occasion (it's been two weeks without now) but I think it's usually because I eat too fast (old habits) or don't chew well enough. I usually just wait 15-20 min and then am able to eat. I also tolerate dairy so made some custard with skim milk and splenda this weekend. Mmmm!

Hello Mary! Most meats do not cause me any problems. The only thing I've had problems with are fried chicken. I don't know if it';s the skin, or the oil. I can eat chicken otehrwise. As for your worries about protein... Go to your local GNC. They have a product called Isopure. (The grape is the best flavor they carry.) The first time or two you try it, you might not like the after taste, but trust me, it gets better, and what's best is that a 20 oz bottle is 40 grams of whey protein. I drink close to 2 bottles a day and it has slowed my hair loss, and am doing great. Good luck! ~Cyndi
