having problems updating my profile and personal messages

I need help, I have been trying to update my personal message on my profile and have been unsuccessful. I just keep going in circles. First I click on the tan colored "update you profile" bar, which takes me to a screen where it asks for my name and passcode, then I cllick on the bar below, to update my profile, and then it just takes me back to where I was. Is there a secret I'm not getting? Could someone please help me figure it out? I'm not computer illiterate by no means. Have I missed something very obvious?
