Topic: RE: Gaining all the weight back
I had RNY surgery in July 2001 and lost 110 lbs. pretty quickly. Then something unusual happened. The hole from my pouch to my intestine closed up tight. At the same time, a staple in my pouch let go and created a hole to my stomach. Not exactly as planned. Since then I have struggled with weight gain. What helps is having periodic (every 3 months) visits with the surgeon. I have to step on the scales at each visit and I don't want to embarrass myself by gaining a lot of weight and having my doctor see it. So that sort of works for me. But my life is not good, I am back where I was before surgery, having to watch what I eat every day. No fun but at least I have not ballooned due to the fact that I have to face my doctor every three months

Hi Nydia,
You should be able to get the lap band done. I was talking to my surgeon about that as well because I feel that I haven't lost as much weight as I expected. I had the RNY surgery 6/17/01 and I went in at 325 and my lowest was 197. I felt good but I new I could do better. My surgeon suggested either having that lap band or checking my intestines b/c he probably didn't bypass enough. My current weight now is somewhere between 230 and 240 but that's due to being 28 weeks pregnant. After I have the baby in June I plan to revisit my surgeon and see what actions can be done.
Good luck

I have had two babies now since WLS. They are 11 months apart and both are very healthy. I look and feel like a completely different person, though I still feel dissapointed that I still look like a thick chick to other people. When I look at the post-ops who started out weighing less than me, they look amazing now. It's hard sometimes not to compare myself to them, but I guess I won't ever be a thin person. But, then again....when I think of where I've come from, I can't help but be happy. Good luck to all of the pre-ops!!! By the way, I started out wearing a 34W (5X) and am in a size 18/20 now. Woohoooo!!!!!

Topic: 3 years ago I was 301, now I am 174 and holding.
I haven't updated in a long time because I keep staying very busy. I just wanted to put something in here at the time of my third anniversary. I continue to maintain a good weight which fluctuates about 5 pounds from summer to winter. I eat what I want, even sugar, fats, alcohol with little problem. Sugar on an empty stomach is still a bad idea and results in nausea and dizziness. However, I am able to eat anything in a small amount and that is completely satisfying. I was afraid that I would never be able to eat a rich dessert at a special restaurant. I was willing for that to be the case when I decided to have the surgery but I am pleased that I can eat "bad" things on occasion.
The biggest difficulty for me is remembering to eat slowly and chew well because that has not been necessary for me since shortly after my surgery. But when I notice my weight creeping up, remembering to eat slowly seems to solve the problem. My weight does not want to go below 168-175 unless I significantly alter my diet - go on a stricly liquid protein diet. I am not willing to do that on any kind of regular basis and really don't think it is healthy. Meanwhile I love being a normal size 12.
I have not had plastic surgery since WLS. I had an abdominoplasty 13 years ago after significant weight loss on Optifast and despite regaining the weight after the plastic surgery I did not develop an "apron" so I have not needed that surgery again. In fact, my belly is quite firm with only a little bit of loose skin. I also had a thighplasty 13 years ago which resulted in significant complications in lymph drainage in one of my legs. I consequently have chronic swelling in one leg and ankle and have had a blood clot in that leg as a result. Knowing what I know about the potential lymphatic complications and the significant scarring that accompanied the surgery, I would not do it again. Even though I am glad my thighs are shapely, the scarring prevents my feeling comfortable in shorts or bathing suits unless I keep my legs tightly together. Fort hose reasons I have elected not to have my arms done even though there are significant batwings. I realize that the scarring associated with arm-plasty would keep my from wearing sleeveless clothes because I would feel I had to keep my arms down all the time.
I use Bariatric Supplements System as the source of my vitamins because the are tolerated well. I am unable to use calcium supplements because of chronic kidney stones. Bariatric Supplements are specifically for WLS and are easy to order from the Internet at www.bariatricsupplements.com.
I am so happy that I had the surgery. I am able to work long hours on my feet as a physician and I no longer take Prilosec, blood pressure meds, or require CPAP for sleep apnea. I have a congenital immune deficiency which makes me susceptible to many respiratory and skin infections - but I noticed today that I have not missed a single day of work this year because of illness.
The complications of having had the surgery are only that I had to have my gall bladder removed a year after WLS and i have suffered chronic kidney stones for the past year and half. I am fortunate in that they sledom cause much pain. Sometimes the only reason I know I have one is that I urinate a lot of blood and then I realize that I have had some twinges or a backache. I am very lucky in that regard because I know how bad stones can hurt. I was hospitalized twice in 2004 for them but since significantly increasing my water intake, apparently they are small and pass easily.
I hope everyone is doing well.
Topic: Life since 7/23/2001
That's the day my life changed forever and for the best. I have learned not only alot about myself but alot about "friends", and Family. Amazing how many of my "thin" women friends deserted me once i was an equal in size to them, and how many actually felt insicure about me "hanging" out with their husbands. It was all good when I was the FAT friend but it's amazing how many looked at me as a threat. I've learned alot about men too, especially my own husband. I've become arm candy, I've finally earned respect and started getting love. It's for that reason that I can no longer live a lie and am filing for divorce. He never loved me for me......I was an embasrassment that he wanted no one to see til now.
No one wants to deal with the psychological evaluation before the surgery cause their hell bent on having the surgery, but this is where you find it's important cause we all see this surgery as a great way to look good physically, but it's also a major mental change and adjustment as well. Congradulations to all who have had the surgery and maintained their weight loss. I have stabalized at 125-130 lbs...I seem to gain 5 lbs the wk before my period.....I have no regrets, but mental counseling should be a factor post-op.
Topic: My how time goes by!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am at 185 lbs. I want o lose more and I know I can. I want to weigh about 140-150. I still don't eat nearly as much as I use too. I don't excercise because I have a hernia and it hurts. I had it repaired 1 year ago and the pain never stopped. I'm thinking he never fixed it. I'm scared to do sit ups because of the pain. I am now trying to get it fixed again by a better doctor. Has anyone had a breast reduction or lifty approved my the insurer?
