Back Home!

Am happy to report that I am safe and sound and back home. Actually got released late yesterday afternoon (had some problems with nausea from the first pain med they tried and then had my oxygen plummet which delayed my release by about six hours.)

But am home, had my first good post-op sleep (in my own bed), and am looking very forward to my upcoming shower!

Things went better - and differently than I expected. One big difference being the oxygen - which is going to require home therapy for at least two weeks. Which was totally unexpected. Luckily the dust bunnies didn't scare the oxygen tech to death!

So just the logistics of that sent a monkey wrench into the plans.

The physical surgery itself went awesome. My incisions are A-MA-ZING - tiny and don't even itch much less hurt! And I have the cutest new belly button as well! There is more pain and bruising from these darned Heparin shots than from the incision sites. Mostly have no pain, but took some pain meds to help sleep and to provide a cushion for when I twisted and turned which did help. (Especially when I woke up with two cats sleeping on my stomach/chest which luckily still had a pillow on it to prevent such problems.)

The nausea was not unexpected - had it the last time I had surgery as well - and that slowed down recovery. Had me on three different nausea meds and still was unable to keep anything down at first. (They will not switch you from IV pain meds until you can pass the water test to show that you can ingest and keep down the volume of liquid required for the oral pain meds.) I actually ended up just going without any pain meds at all for about six hours (which was not too terrible) which cleared up the nausea and allowed me to do the water test, drink broth, jello, iced tea, etc. By the time I left the hospital I was doing 4 ounces per hour easily and so far today and doing one ounce every five minutes for the first part of the hour and then sip, sip, sipping for the rest.

All in all, it went incredibly well. Never actually got nervous, husband was awesome, family was supportive, and other than the nausea and oxygen complications the whole thing was oddly not even unpleasant. (Well, other than those Heparin shots! Which we now get to self-administer for the first time...ugh!) Surgeon and hospital staff were also absolutely incredible.

Hope all the other June post-ops are recovering well and that the pre-ops are preparing well!
