Topic: RE: where is everyone spending thanksgiving?
We're going to a Unitarian Universalist Camp/Lodge thing in the mountains. That way it's more about the yoga and hiking than the food! Sure, there will be dinner, but it will be easier not to eat too much with so much else going on. Instead of preparing and cleaning up, I'll be meditating, reading, writing, visiting, knitting, hiking, and getting a massage. Much healthier than Thanksgivings Past! We bought snack foods to share with others there. Most of what we're taking is stuff I can enjoy, too (at meal or snack time, not in between). I went to one Thanksgiving get together of friends Saturday evening. It was wonderful, and most of the food was WLS friendly, except for the desserts. I had a teensy bite of the sweet potato casserole, which was way too sweet, and not tasty at all (everyone else was raving about it). I did enjoy the turkey breast that was rolled and stuffed with spinach and mushrooms, the fresh green beans, and a bite of the artichoke dip, though! I ate a bite of the mashed white potatoes. Eh. Just ok. I don't think I like them anymore, to be honest. I've become a flavor snob, I guess. My NUT gave me the advice to eat a very small amount of anything I can tolerate at Thanksgiving dinner. She did caution to eat protein first, but other than that, it's all fair game. I think I'll be taking that to heart, and just skipping the sweets, but having a bit of everything else. I realized at the party that I'm enjoying the freedom so much of not being drawn to the hours devours tables so much. It feels wonderful to skip over what I don't need to eat, and not just eat because others are eating. I used to feel that I had to eat because others were eating. Now, I eat because it's time (I'm not hungry yet. I know that will come back eventually, and I'm not sure yet how I feel about that). Instead of eating so much, I did the following: Rocked an 8 week old baby (that was absolutely wonderful) Talked with friends Walked outside and enjoyed the warmth of the outdoor fireplace against the coolness of the night air Did Kareoke Watched everyone else complaining that they were too full Listened to everyone reading stories/poems/quotes telling about things that they were thankful for. Basically, I was present in the moments without the food table calling to me. Ok, screaming. I think I had a very full evening, and I don't think I missed anything. Sure, I walked right past the gourmet desserts (the two who cooked the dinner were gourmet chefs). They didn't need me to eat them this time. This year, I'm rather thankful for a lot, not the least of which being my RNY.
