Hi everyone, Im new on here. My surgery date was 6-25-07 I started at 330 lbs and im now down 95 lbs. in 3 months YAY me! I have lots of questions .....Unfortunately the bariatric center I went to has closed and has not been in contact with me since 1 month after my surgery, my physician is also not very educated on the gastric bypass info and told me to join a support group online......SOooo here I am. Ive kinda been doing everything on my own as far as foods , excercise, and "feeling" my way around new foods . I was wondering if popcorn is an o.k. snack , I remember being told that I could never have it again but I see some posts that mention it . Thanks for any help and I enjoy reading all your' messages! :-D

My NUT says that popcorn is not okay because it can get stuck in the opening that goes into the pouch. But I have had popcorn and not had any problems with it. If you have to have it, I would suggest air popped popcorn rather than greesy microwavable popcorn. If you want to shoot me an email I can send you a copy of the binder they give us at my doctor's office (I went through Kaiser). Most likely if you have a question, it can be found in the patient binder. They have really great support at my hospital with support groups and a staff that's there to answer questions. Good luck to you! ~michelle~

I've had it about 4 times since surgery. The kind at the movie theater seems to be okay (but a very small amount is all you can handle!) The microwave kind for some reason does not agee with me. Of course it is the butter flavor and probably too greasy for the pouch. The smell is contagious though!

April, I have had it several times over the past couple of weeks - no problems. I do get the microwave kind - the low fat type. What type of surgery did you have? I am also from Grand Rapids, MI. I am just wondering if you could call MMPC- Michigan Weight Loss Specialist. (616-974-4400) and talk to them about getting into their program. You PCP may also be able to refer you to someone. I think it is important to have a Weight Loss specialist you can work with. You are now a special needs patient and if your PCP is not very educated in the gastric bypass info, you need to work with someone her is. Where was the baritric center at? (just curious).

Hello Delores! Thanks for the response and the # I am going to call them and see if i could maybe attend a support group or something as well as ask for info on anything i can do. I had my gastric bypass RNY they did it lapriscopic first then I had ALOT of issues within 10 hrs my blood pressure was almost nothing and i was white as a ghost etc. so they did an emergency surgery and found I had just under 300 cc's of blood in my belly IT WAS A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! The people there brought me a meal my first night there , AND AN ICE WATER ......which I was dying to drink , since I didnt have any liquids for 4 days and the chicken smelled great , My family almost lost it on them. It was almost all students and I told them Im to old to be anyones lad rat LOL The bariatric center is New Life Bariatric in Muskegon I found out yesterday that they actually merged with mercy general and hackley isnt performing the surgery any longer. THANK GOD. But I am disappointed that they havent followed up with me or been concerned at all. It kinda sucks to be in this and feel alone in it. Sooooo thanks again for the info and take care! Welcome April! I have eaten popcorn numerous times. In fact I will air pop a bunch and keep it in a ziploc bag to eat as a snack during the week. I don't put butter or salt on it. But it is still a nice treat! congrats on your weight loss! I'm sorry to hear about your center closing down. I live in GR and attend MMPC Michigan weightloss specialists. Maybe you could call their offices and see if you could see them? IF you need anything let me know. I don't know that much but I am always willing to share any of the info. that I receive! Beth

Welcome April! My doctor strongly discourages popcorn so I haven't gone there yet. I do know lots of people who are ok with it and there is SOME fiber in it so it isn't all bad! hope you are able to find a new doctor. judi

Hi April!! Welcome to the board I don't know about popcorn. Personally, I am too scared to try it.

Hi April, welcome! My surgeon and nut strongly discourage popcorn for two reasons. It can swell with any liquid in the stomach, and block the stoma. And the hard skins can scratch and irritate the tissue (there's no stomach acid anymore to help break down those skins). That all being said, I do know of many surgeons and nutritionists who DO allow popcorn. I've tried a little of it, and I had no problem, but I seem to have lost my cravings for it so I don't eat it anymore. It smells really good when I go to the movies but when I eat some, I just feel.....bleh. Like...this isn't that good anymore, so not worth going against my surgeons recommendations. I'll save that for something like a bite of a divine dessert! Donna
