Straws
hi julie, i really don't know how my dr. feels about straws i have read lots of posts on here about it........good and bad....
i have used a straw i actually feel i do better with a straw i don't take as much of a swig with a straw and i always swirl the liquid around before swallowing so that the air doesn't go down....
i have never had pains....i guess if you swallowed the air you would have...
not sure if i helped you out
I use a straw. I have had no problems with it at all. I find if I don't use a straw, I gup things and it usually comes back. I also drink more during the day with a straw than without because I don't gulp. Old habits are hard to break sometimes.
the big concern with straws is excess gas. It all depends on you.
The theory is, you will swallow air and stretch your pouch and also not take enough nutrition with all the air in there. I honestly don't know where that crap was thought up because my surgeon never told me not to use a straw, and I was given a straw for my first drink in the hospital. And when I was discharged they gave me a giant 32 oz mug for my water with one of those flexible built in straws. I also tend to gulp too much too fast if I don't use a straw. I would say use your own judgement on that one

I've been using a straw for protein drinks since about 3 weeks post-op even thought my dr's program says not to. The reason they gave was due to the potential to swallow air. Never had any gas problems so I started using the straw to keep the smell away from my nose!!
I don't like using a straw for other drinks though.
i was told no straws for the rest of my life.
and there's the three c's that i have to stay away from for the rest of my life as well:
1. corn
2. celery
3. coconut
The three C's can get stuck in the opening to the pouch.
The straw thing I was told because it puts too much air into the pouch... but I dunno... I haven't tried it and don't plan on it...
