How do you eat slow?

This has got to be the hardest thing for me! I have always been a fast eater. I think this is why I have trouble keeping stuff down now. I already eat with a baby spoon so that I take smaller bites. So what is your method for making yourself eat slow?

Buffy, I wish I had the answer there, honey. I eat faster than I should still, but keep trying to improve. I've gotten my meals to 20 minutes, but know I need to work harder to get it to 30. Do you remember to put your baby spoon down after taking a bite? It seems like such a dumb thing, but they say it helps. I usually just play with mine, keeping it up and out of puppy range. She's always very curious about my utensils. She just knows that if she can just get close enough, I'll give her a bite of whatever is near the fork. She's a little dog, and so cute. I just can't banish her from my area when I'm eating. I'm a sucker and probably a bad mom. Oh, well! I'm sorry I don't have more advice. The only thing I can think of is the putting down your utensil thing. There is an old movie (not really that old) called Flight of the Navigator. The little boy is moving around, I think trying to get out, and the deep voice says, "Sit down, Navigator." When you're eating, think of James Earl Jones saying, "Put it down, Buffy." It may not make you eat slower, but my silliness may distract you! Take care! Cindy

LOL - yes that is funny! Now I'm always going to hear that while I'm eating! I do fine with my husband is here and I eat with him, but during the day I find myself eating too fast, especially when I eat in front of this darn computer!

I can't eat at the computer or while I read because I get transfixed and next thing I know the food is gone and I have no idea what I ate or whether I chewed it well. Instead I will only drink while on the computer or reading. This is one of the things I talked about with the psychologist pre-op -- I was afraid I would continue the "mindless" eating. I cannot sit at the dining room table by myself with nothing else to do other than eat, which is what is typically recommended. So, I do watch TV which was never a big problem, but, put a book in my hands and I'm gone for hours. At least I got rid of 2 of my bad habits!

try putting the spoon/fork down between bites. Wait until you're completely through chewing and have swallowed before you pick it back up. On the few occasions where I dont eat too fast........ this is how I do it. I think maybe I chew faster when the fork is loaded and ready to go..... but I'm working on it. good luck!! Mel

This sounds awful, but I read a magazine or something. My husband has done it for years. It always irritated me, but now its useful.

I have the same problem, and because of it I throw up at least 3 times a week if not more. Over the past couple of days I have taken a bite, and while I have been chewing I have left the table, put away the dishwasher, put in a load of laundry....anything to keep my mind off of taking another bite. I hope I can master this! Kyla

I think I'm going to try what you said Kyla, I like that idea. I sure as heck haven't managed to slow down at all. I can't even make a meal last 15 minutes. It's so tiny! How can 2 tablespoons last that long? I'm sure tired of puking though, having another episode tonight Donna

I'm in the same boat with you. I feel lucky if I get the meal to last 15 minutes. I try putting down the fork between bites and all the other suggestions that have been given and I still have trouble. Guess this is one area I just have to keep working on improving. Nice to know I'm not alone. Shirley
