Subject: PROTEIN PILL?
Question
I RECENTLY UNDERWENT GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY. MY DOCTOR RECOMENDS THAT I TAKE 30G OF PROTEIN A DAY BY WAY OF A SHAKE OR LIQUID. I THINK I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING THERE IS TO TRY AND THEY ALL TASTE HORRENDOUS! IT'S BEEN 4 MONTHS AND I HAVEN'T BEEN TAKING IN ANY PROTEIN EXCEPT FOR FOOD WHICH I EAST SO LIITLE OF IT'S NOT ENOUGH. MY HAIR IS NOW FALLING BIG TIME. HAS ANYONE INVENTED A PROTIEN PILL AND CAN IT BE DONE? THANK YOU.
Answer
While it is certainly possible to have proteins in solid dosage forms such as tablets or capsules the use of same as a dietary source of protein is just not practical. This is because of the large volume required to deliver the therapeutic amounts. In order to provide the amount as well as the variety of amino acids would require that you take about 100 such pills each day. Not entirely practical for most people. It is easier, more cost effective, and aesthetically pleasing for most to utilize powders that can be transformed into liquid or to use the available liquid products.
There are so many products on the market that I cannot help to think that you could still find one that you can tolerate. I realize that you have tried to the point of frustration and I also know that I have little knowledge of the exact restrictions you are working under but there are protein powder products that I have used personally that combine well with either water or milk to yield nicely palatable drinks. Perhaps you could even consult with one of your local health food stores or juice bars where they specialize in formulating power protein drinks with fruit juices and such. You might be surprised.
Or.....you could locate some currently available product line of amino acids in tablets/capsules and try that approach instead. You would want to consult with your physician and/or dietician in order to make sure that your decision is appropriate to include all of the amino acids necessary. For instance you can start here: http://www.herbalremedies.com/aminoacids.html?source=google&engine=adwords!32&ke...
Or....you could enlist the help and support of your local pharmacist to encapsulate another product of bulk protein powder for you. If you dedide on this option you have to make sure that the protein isolate that you select is suitable for direct ingestion and is not intended only for consumption after mixing and diluting. You don't want to create a bezoar or irritate your gut lining.
My personal recommendation still remains that your best option is to find a tasty concoction you can live with and use. It will cost you less in the long run.
