I've missed all of the great support found on this board! I was traveling for my job...in SE Alaska (Ketchikan, Wrangell, Sitka, Petersburg) where there was recording breaking heat! (75 may not seem hot to y'all, but I about melted!) Back home for about an hour and back to the board! Glad to see many of you still doing well! Traveling was hard, with my normal protein/vitamin routine all messed up. Seems like I didn't eat the way I should, and a few times sick. Good traveling companions though, they took me in stride. I'll be lurking out there again...have a great weekend!

Alaska is the most beautiful place Ive been to on the planet. I remember fishing in Larsen Bay off of Kodiak Island as if it were yesterday. This Floridian cant handle your winters, but I love your summers there. The mosquitos are outrageous. They are so big they could wear dog collars. However, I have the most amazing pictures of bear and other wildlife. If you can make one trip in your life and it has to count go to Alaska. I know we cant really drink anymore but there beer kicks ass too. It's a trip you wont forget. I couldnt believe the icebergs are really kind of blue instead of a white. Anchorage is fun. Juno is beautiful. The mountains are so big they have their own weather patterns. Of course you have to see Denali. Go to Alaska. This Florida boy will never forget his adventure there. I recommend really seeing and not getting stuck on a cruise or train.

Bill - You sound as in love with Alaska as I am (born and raised, and proud of it!) My job has taken me to many areas (SE as mentioned earlier, Kodiak, Fairbanks, Homer, Soldotna, Nome, Bethel, and of course have done the tour guide to many visiting family to Denali. I went outside for one semester of college 20+ years ago, and got so homesick I came back here to finish! My husband talks of retiring somewhere else to get away from the winters, but we will see...guess it depends on where the grand-babies are (none yet and not trying to rush anything). The rest of my immediate family spent the week in South Carolina...and all probably lost a few pounds because of the heat and humidity. I like them to see the other part of the world. Is it also hot where you are in FL? I've only been there once, to Miami to take a cruise. It is a long way to travel to FL from here, as you probably remember!

Those blue icebergs are glaciers I'm from the Anchorage area myself and I miss it so much it hurts. As soon as my husband's re-enlistment comes up he is going to request to be stationed there so we can go home lol. Donna

Welcome back! Just seeing you mention those towns made me homesick What kind of foods did you find on the trip? I know you were trying to bring stuff with you, did you bring anything that worked? Any restaurants that went out of their way for your needs? It's good to have you back Donna

Donna - I thought I packed pretty well (as far as food). I think where I went wrong was the 'extra' things I tried. Like for breakfast, I ordered an egg, but the bacon smelled so good, and it really tasted good too! But, my stomach thought differently. And one night we went to a mexican place; I should have just had beans, but tried a carne asada quesadilla. I did not eat 4 bites of that meat, and knew that was a mistake too. I ended up having nuts now and then, soy rice cakes, and soup 3x, but it was so jumbled, and when you don't get to eat until 7:30 p.m. and then you are hungry you think you can eat anything. I took tuna but never ate it. Only 1 day out of 5 seemed to get in all the protein (via shakes) and vitamins I should have. OOOHHH, it is good to be home!

I forgot to add....I didn't ask the restaurants for anything special. Based on what little I ate, the restaurants took a lot of good food away from me untouched, and never even asked me if anything was wrong, which was okay because I wasn't really into discussing it anyway.
