Ramblings for today
So today, Beth's shopping post inspired me to go through my closet and drawers and pull out all the clothes that I've been bypassing because they didn't fit. I found 6 dress slacks that I can wear to work and I've also got a pile of 4 pairs of slacks that are now too big! I've been afraid to try....you know how those feelings of failure creep up on you. Well today I went through everything. I've got one pair of jeans that I managed to get up and zipped, made it hard to breathe though lol, that I haven't had on my body in almost 10 years!(Why do I keep them? Who the heck knows!)
Now, my scale finally moved another pound down today, but I'm wondering if there's something I'm doing wrong that is causing the slow movement. I'm still debating on whether I want to increase my carbs as much as the NUT said. My problem is, I have two nutritionists. One at the Army hospital where I went for the initial consultation to see if I qualified for the surgery, and a different one that works with my surgeon's office. I get conflicting advice on the carbs. I'm trying to do research but all the official medical stuff I can find is old, and other stuff is from places like bodybuilding websites, and a ton of people with opinions, but no real authorithy to give a definitive answer. I'm so confused lol. My nutritionist at the Army hospital says that too low carbs will keep me in ketosis and I don't want to do that. Idiot me didn't ask why. What is wrong with ketosis? If ketosis occurs because your body is burning fat rather than carbs for energy...isn't that a good thing? I'm pretty sure that's one reason we're supposed to be drinking so much water, to flush the kidneys well.
Anyways, I'm going to have to hit up a library and find a medical journal or something. I hate not understanding things about my own body
Thanks for letting me ramble

Hey Donna,
First, HUGE CONGRATS on your clothes. That's what makes the waiting for the scale to move worth it for me. I've moved from my 22/24's being too tight to now loving the roominess I have going on in those 22s. I tried on some size 20 slacks yesterday, and I figure I'll be in them in about 7 or 8 more pounds. They actually buttoned and zipped, but they didn't look good and weren't comfortable yet, so I'll wait a few more weeks.
Hey, I think it's really good you are doing research on the carb thing. Have you asked Dr. Curry? He could surely explain the ketosis thing and why it's not good. I know that with the Atkins diet, you actually are going for ketosis. They have you test your urine and everything to make sure you get there. I hated that diet and almost killed my family after two weeks because they tried to keep me away from popcorn. That's beside the point, though. How about checking with Dr. Curry? If you do, please share with me what he says, okay? I'd be very interested in his take.
Also, maybe check with the CDC--they have a great response system for checking on health issues. I asked the question once about why bananas make my stomach hurt (I'm a diabetic), and they sent me this whole book about managing my diabetes. They're a really good resource. You'll get lots of information from studies about diabetes if you search ketosis (I did a quick look), but you can actually contact them and ask them, too. They'll send you some materials, probably. Oh, and they'll probably come with some postage due. I think when they sent me that book, they only paid about half the postage needed, for some reason. I wanted the information, so I paid the six bucks on the COD.
Thanks for letting me ramble back!

Awesome news about the pants!!! I still haven't tried on the clothes I am dreading.... I think we all do that.... but then again.... if I want to long I may miss out wearing them and by the time I get the courage to try them on they'll be too big! Wouldn't that be something! This is just my opinion, especially with my husband just getting out of the army and having experienced army hospitals myself..... go with the one your surgeon introduced you to. I am sure he/she deals with patients in your situation all the time... more so than the nutritionist at the army hospital. Hope the scale gets to moving for you soon!

Donna!!!!!!!! CONGRATS TO YOU!!!!!!!!! you are doing marveloussssssssss!!!!!!!!!
Girl you can ramble anytime i love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i learn so much from everyone on here!!!!!!
i know what you mean though when you said you were afraid to try them on because of failure.......i felt the same way......but when i was putting some stuff on they were hanging on me so i cleaned out the closet already....but what a wonderful feeling when you finally find something you hadn't wore in forever and it is either to baggy already or it fits.....
right now i am wearing my skinny jeans i hadn't wore in 5-6 years only saved one pair..but now they are getting baggy on me.......I LOVE IT!!!!!!
Yay! "New" clothes! Awesome! Before too long you'll be shopping in a store because your closet will be empty!
Please let us know what you find out about the carbs. My nutritionist said 35 g - which is impossible when you add in fruits and vegetables!
I know ketosis for too long is hard on your kidneys. 6-8 glasses of water is the NORMAL amount of water suggested without being in ketosis, so not sure that makes up for prolonged ketosis. A puzzler for sure.
Thank you everyone for your encouragement and compliments on the pants! I even had a new wow moment last night. I went to bed and before I fell asleep I felt something poking me while laying on my side. I kept feeling for whatever was under me and you know what it was? MY HIP BONE! I haven't felt that sucker in YEARS! LOL I'm such a dork
Also, on the ketosis thing, I found this during my research yesterday and I have to say this is the most understandable and reasonable response yet. It is given by a registered dietician at Ohio State University Medical Center.
Question:
What are the effects of a person who is not diebetic but is in ketosis - like the people that are on the Adkins diet. Short term and long term effects on the body. thank you.
Answer:
When your body is not receiving enough energy from carbohydrates, your body begins breaking down fat stores into ketones, which can be used as energy. However, the brain does not use ketones effectively and becomes sluggish. Therefore your body begins to breakdown muscle and organ tissue to provide the energy for the brain. When you begin to lose muscle mass, your metabolism will also decrease. Muscle mass burns calories and thus drives your metabolic rate. The only way to spare the muscle and organ tissue is to get carbohydrates in the diet. Also, long term ketones are hard on the kidneys and can increase enzymes.
