Going to Cry
My doctor put me on a 1200 calorie diet before surgery and really pushed education on nutrition and about what to expect with surgery. I have a whole binder on what to eat, what not to eat and when to eat it... They also have suggestions and ideas to follow when you are having problems. I had about 5 or 6 classes that I had to go to before surgery and I still go for support groups with the health educator at my hospital.
My scale also hasn't really moved in about a week and a half, but I'm trying to not let it get me down (I was really depressed about it last week). I also had my visitor but she's gone now and i lost about a half a pound since she finally went away. Are any of you having trouble with your visitor? She came with a vengeance this time and I'm thinking I'm going to need some help controlling her... Maybe birth control or an IUD.
You're doing fine... Don't forget PROTEIN first... Keep up the good work!
Let's see...mandatory Nut appt prior to accepting me for surgery (very good picture given of what would be required in the way of protein intake FOREVER).
Mandatory 4 hr education pre-op included about 1 - 1.5 hours on nutrition post-op.
Both of the above sessions were explicit about what to eat, what not to eat, and how I would feel about eating. The stress was on hydration first, then protein above everything else.
Another mandatory 1 hour nutrition class pre-op was cancelled so I went post-op at about 3 weeks. Good interaction with pre- and post-ops talking about food choices - what works, what the alternatives are.
A thorough book on WLS prepared by the surgical practice gave explicit info on liquids only, soft foods, and progression diet, as well as pre- and post-op medical info, vitamins, other meds.
The WLS package includes 6 months of appts (as many as you want) with the Nut. PLus the reading I did on OH prior to surgery really helped me focus on issues I might have and I asked about them pre-op so I was prepared.
Overall, I'm very impressed with the program I'm in.
Hi hon, don't cry - oh what the heck, go ahead and cry if you need to . I know what you're going through and sometimes a good cry really did help.
I had my surgery 6/21, still can't "eat" anything and I went from 358.6 pre-surgery, to 333 on my first follow-up. I threw up all the time, couldn't get in much water let alone protein and when I would get on the scale over the course of the next 3 weeks (waiting for my 2nd follow-up) it would not move. I was an emotional wreck. Now that I am getting in more water (still cannot take in foods) and moving I have been losing weight every day.
In order to lose weight we need to drink a lot of water every day, get in protein, and move... The more protein you can get in, the more you will lose.
We must remember that for the REST OF OUR LIVES, food is only for our pleasure. We will NOT get ANY NUTRITIONAL VALUE from it. It's our vitamins, protein, water and movement that will sustain us.
It's hard to see it now, but your body will give in and stop fighting you - I promise. I also know that my body will stop fighting me and let me eat again soon - I must be patient and take it ONE MOMENT AT A TIME.
God bless and if you ever need a shoulder, I've got 2!!!

Hi Janie: we have the same surgery date and I have lost 27 lbs. I like the Laughing Cow with crackers too but I decided to try to cut back on the crackers. Started putting it on Carl Buddhig slices. I figure any carbohydrate not eaten is a good thing!
Hang in there, I've read lots of posts that some people only drop actual pounds once a month because of their period. You may be one of those people.
This post actually made me feel better because every day that I don't do fitday I feel like I have eaten too much.

See when i did my NUT appointment it maybe was 20 minutes long. I was asked about my eating habits before hand and then read a packet for the liquid/soft stage. I am going to ask if i am not have more appointments with then but i don't recall anything said about that. I have my 2 month check up on the 18th so i will speak to my MD and find out what the deal is.
Hi Jamie --
hang in there -- that scale WILL move again! Think of where you would still be without the surgery! You've come a long way!
Our program required three 1 hour appts with the Dietician + 1 more hour at the Pre-Op. I'm 6 weeks out and I've had 2 more 1 hour appts. since (one at 1 week post-op and 1 at 5 weeks). Check with your insurance -- you may have coverage to see a registered dietician that is totally separate from your surgery. Mine has been really helpful, and has helped me find some creative things to eat -- especially during the puree stage! Good luck!
