I posted this on the RNY forums, but wanted to put it here too for you all: I wanted to post a warning of sorts on the amount of salt you take in post op and the effect it has on the scale. I've seen lots of people posting about how they only lost "X" amount so far and wonder what they're doing wrong. One suggestion is to watch the amount of salt you take in. Many people find that their pouches do better with warm liquids rather than cold ones, as was my case. So I drank alot of decaf tea....and chicken bouillon/broth. I didn't lose that much at first, but then I stopped drinking the warm liquids as my pouch healed up and the weight started to come off quicker. Then yesterday I got on the scale and there was a 4 POUND INCREASE. I was like WTF?! I didn't haven't eaten over 750 calories since my surgery. How the heck did I gain 4 pounds in a day? (Btw, my surgeon recommends 600-800 cals a day for the first 6 months). So what did I do wrong? Well I called my surgeon's office and he asked me what I ate the day before. I described my meal (whi*****luded about 3 cups of chicken broth throughout the day) and he said "BINGO". The sodium in the broth is most likely the culprit, causing water retention. I thought about it, and yeah, I got all my water in that day, but didn't hardly pee at all that day. I felt better knowing it wasn't 4 pounds of fat I'd gained, bu****er which is much more easily shed. Keep this in mind when asking yourself what's going on with slow weight loss! Donna
