severe cramping

This afternoon I was in so much pain. At about 11:15 this morning I had a few sips of a protein/no sugar added Carnation instant breakfast drink. It did not go down well, so I poured it out. I had strong feelings of pressure since then, and about two hours later it got much worse. I hadn't eaten anything today, nor drunk anything else. The pressure became cramping and it was so bad (I'd say a 10 on the pain scale-- the worst I have ever felt), I called the Dr. who advised me to go to the ER. On the way out the door I had a very small burp and by the time I was in the car the pain had gone away. So I didn't go to the ER. My doctor called later and said cramping in the esophagus happens sometimes. It was so horrible I hope it never happens again. Has anyone ever had this experience? ~Naomi

Oh WOW Naomi! I'm so sorry to hear this happened and glad you called your doctor. That hasn't happened to me yet and I hope it never does. It doesn't sound like a pleasant experience at all.

I am sooo sorry to hear about your cramping pain. I know this sounds weird, but you may have still had some food that had not gone down in there and mixed with beverage it creates a clog. I have had several episodes where I get extreme pain right in the middlle of my breast bone - no matter how well i chewed, or waited between bites, or held off drinking I would get it. You feel like you are having the most horrible chest pain and it seems like nothing will make it go away. Food gets stuck and ithe only way to make it move, is for us to move. Get up, start walking, lift your arms above your head, in circles, do shoulder rolls, breathe in through your nose, out through you mouth to avoid adding more air/gas to the problem, stand straight, expand your ribs and just try to RELAX. I bought straws with a really tiny opening, and when I sip, I pinch the flexible part a little bit so I can still draw in like I am used to doing, but I restrict what comes through. I take in less air than when I don't use a straw and again remember, BREATHE IN THROUGH YOUR NOSE, NOT YOUR MOUTH as much as possible. Even when you're not eating or drinking - you take in less air which means less gas bubbles. My doctor gave me a prescription for Pepcid and I take 4 tums smoothies to help reduce gas and acid. I hope this helps you. If you would like to, feel free to add me as a friend. They say take it one day at a time, I prefer one moment at a time... God Bless, briggie ^i^
