Protein and Foods

I am now about 2 1/2 weeks postop and feeling well. My problem is I am not nearly reaching my 50-60 grams of protein a day I am supposed to reach. With the amount of food (2 ounces 5 to 6 times a day) it is very hard to get in the right amount of protein. My physician moved me from a liquid diet to soft foods not pureed. I have been eating tuna, cottage cheese, FF cheese slices, Yogurt, Baked Fish, Pinto Beans, Refried Beans, Black-eyed peas without any problems. I tried 2 ounces of a scrambled egg the other day and regreted it all day and into the night. I think it may have been to heavy for me. Has anyone's doctor told them it would be okay to do the Protein Bars. I think they would be easier for me to get it than the protein drinks. I am going to call my doctor next week and ask him. Julie

Hey Julie...sounds like you are doing a good job. We have to work up to the amount they want us to get. Just make sure you are eating your protein first. My surgeon doesn't even give us an amount of protein to get in. He just wants us to make sure we eat our protein first and make that 2/3's of the meal. I'd definately call and find out what your surgeon says....they are all so different. Pam

Julie - I don't know what kind if protein drinks you have tried, but I've run across some called Unjury ( you buy them on-line) and the taste is the best I've had so far. You can get 20 grams of protein with one 8oz. drink. So I get one when I first wake up, one about 3:00 p.m. and one about 8:00 p.m. Those drinks alone = 60 grams, so whatever I eat just add to the count. On the other hand, I can' seem to get in enough other calories a day. Even with the protein shakes, I'm pushing 500 calories. It's the rules about quit drinking before you eat, then eat--which takes a while--then wait to drink again. I don't know how long of day I am supposed to have to get in everything we are supposed to. I'm not even going to talk about the missing water from my 'diet'. I just keep plugging along!

I am about 6 weeks out and am having the same problem. I'm supposed to be getting 60-80 grams of protein in per day, and I am lucky to get 40 on most days. I am so sick of the protein shakes that I havn't been drinking them. My plan is to go to GNC tomorrow and check out the available protein bars and supplements. I bought a whey protein and it is ubber nasty... Good luck.

My nut wants us to get in 60 grams of protein daily... and said in the beginning to do 2 shakes if possible. I was having a hard time getting them down before they were warm and nasty --- so I started using 1/2 - 1 cup of milk (somewhere between the 2) and a scoop of chocolate protein and 1/2 scoop of vanilla. So, it takes less time to drink it - I get an extra 11.5 grams of protein plus I add 5-6 ice cubes. This combination has worked great for me. Also, I use the Body Fortress Protein from Wal-Mart. It is the only one I really like ... I did try the UnJury and it just didn't settle well for me... the flavor wasn't as good as the other. Good luck!!!
