I had open RNY on 6/18 and virtually had NO pain until 3 weeks post-op. Had a pain start in my upper right quadrant that at times radiates. It doesn't matter if I've eaten or not for it to hurt. The pain has been so bad at times that I have been in tears and takes away my breath most of the time. I did call my surgeons nurse and she said it is probably just healing going on or that I over did it. Has anyone else had a similar pain after their surgeries? After she said to take it easy, it would probably feel better I did nothing for an entire day. It still hurt and doesnt' seem to matter if I do my mile walks after meals or not for the intensity of the pain. I don't know, perhaps I'm paranoid and it is just healing, but it doesn't seem right. I didn't even have any incisional pain, so why would this hurt so bad? Thanks for any replies! Pam

Hi Pam, Sorry to hear that you are hurting. I had Lap RNY rather than the open procedure. However, I did have the pain you are describing but it was in the left upper quadrant. My surgeon said that was typical after this kind of surgery and the pain will often radiate to the shoulder and sometimes into the back. I had one day when the pain was just overwhelming and had me in tears. However, it has been gone for quite a while now and my surgery was only 4 days before you. I guess if it continues, insist on going in and being seen by either your surgeon or your PCP. Good luck sweetie! By the way, you look great! Mary

I'm probably going to end up going in. I'll just go see my PCP. To me it's just weird that I didn't have any pain for 3 weeks and then this starts. If it was healing inside, why am I not feeling the healing anywhere else? And thank you....I haven't lost anything for a week and a half, so GRRRR. Hopefully it will start back again soon.

Hi Pamela, I saw this on another thread, and I agree with one of those posters that this could be your gall bladder. As for the stall at three weeks, I stalled there too. Acccording to my DH, he read that it is normal to stall around three weeks as our body is trying to catch up with everything that it has been through. Good luck with your pain. Beth

Thank you Beth. I'm very stubborn and didn't call today, but if the pain is still as intense at times as it has been, I'm calling tomorrow morning. I want to go back to work on Monday morning (half days), but really don't want to go back with this pain. I'm really trying not to slouch or turn in bed as I've figured out that really intensifies the pain. I should have excellent posture when this pain goes away. *S* And yep, I know that the stall is normal and I do know that I'm shrinking in size. Went to Walmart and took my BP and my arm fit all the way in. *S* It would just be nice to see the number move. Pam

Hi Pam, Just thought I'd chime in here too....I have to agree with some of the other posts, it sounds suspiciously like gall bladder attacks. I had to have mine out a couple of years ago, what a relief! The last, worst attack I had was so bad I sincerely didn't know if I was going to be okay or not. Definitely call your doc and get checked out! Kath S.

I agree with Kath S. What you describe sounds an awful lot like gall stones. I had my first gall bladder attack when I was 4 weeks post partum. Dear Lord that's a pain I won't ever forget. I looked at my scar where the gall bladder was removed.....right upper quadrant If you still have your gall bladder, go have it checked out. (hugs) Donna
