Off the Liquid diet!

I am off the liquid diet as of today but was not able to get much down. Is that normal? All I ate today was 2 oz. green beans,4 saltines,6 wheat thins, and a low carb blue bunny yogurt. I also only got in about 36 oz. of water. Any ideas? I'm not hungry but feel light headed sometimes and I know I need to eat more. Beth

Hey Beth, I didn't have to do the LD, but try some cottage cheese, refried bean with cheese added, canned tuna or chicken with nonfat mayo, applesauce...I'd get rid of the crackers for now (there's no nutrition in them). Make sure you chew, chew, chew. I keep my water bottle in my hand pretty much all day long. I set it down a half hour before I eat and pick it back up a half hour afterwards. I'm getting in about 6 cups now....but I had to work up to it. Be careful you don't get dehydrated. Wishing you luck and sending you good thoughts. Did your surgeon give you foods that are okay for you at this stage? Pam

Thanks for the advice Pam! My nut gave me a list but I'm not allowed to have ANY meat/fish/eggs or cheese yet. The list doesnt include protein shakes or anything. Basically its yogurt, cottage cheese (which I hate), cooked non starch veggies, saltines or wheat thins, milk, mash potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash, and baby food. I am doing better with my fluid today! I already have 26 ounces in! Which for me is alot! I am going to keep trying to get the protein in! I wish I could have chicken!! but I have to wait another 2-3 weeks. Beth

Me, too! But I'm on soft foods only (low fat cheese, nonfat cottage cheese, soft cooked eggs, beans, fish, or pureed meats) - max 2 TBS at a time. Still filling in with protein drinks (you don't mention that - are you sure you're getting enough protein?). Take care and enjoy!

I had my surgery on 06/29/2007.Ok, I needs some advise here. How on earth did you all stay sane through the clear liquid stage? i think jello is the enemy and i used to love the stuff. i'm on full liquids on saturday. is anyone or has anyone had adverse reaction to cream soups. wouldn't they make gas worse. I 'm asking because i'm getting my shopping list together.

Hi Sherry -- sugar free popsicles kept me sane through the clear liquid stage. For the full liquids, I have mostly used the cream soups as a diversion from all of the sweet stuff. My doc has us strain them, so it's really just flavored hot milk =-) The only one I can tolerate is the low fat cream of potato. Another "soup" that my nut recommended is blended, thinned cottage cheese, mixed with V8 juice. Sounds funny, but it's actually really good. I've been adding a little fresh basil and telling myself it's tomato bisque! Happy shopping! Alex

Sherry: Can you have protein shakes on your full liquid diet? I have been drinking 4 ounces for breakfast. I thought they were horrible pre-op, but well-chilled, they aren't too bad. I have also liked strained cream of chicken soup. I tried strained broccoli-cheese soup, but it wasn't so good. My nut suggested making the cream soups with milk in lieu of water to increase the protein. I can also have low sugar, low fat yogurt on full liquids. I get pureeds on Tuesday, Yippee! Melissa

Aren't the crackers high in carbs? I don't think I woudl be able to tolerate them. Have you tried oatmel watered down or cream of wheat? Can you have yogurt or watered down mashed potatoes? Those are all on my list of things I can have.
