12 dys post op - not getting protein
Ug, I'm trying. The protein mixes are gross. I've tried nearly all of them. The most protein I'm getting is 25 g -- HALF of what I need. And I feel it. I'm sluggish, nauseous, and generally blah. Basically the protein I'm getting is from tunafish, mushy refried beans, and eggs.
Please, anyone w/ suggestions? My poor husband....
thanks for any help
Hi Wendy,
Have you tried any of the ready-to-drink shakes? I use the Atkins Advantage or Slim Fast Low Carb. Vanilla works best for me and it has to be REALLY cold! I tried quite a few of the powder mixes, I'm sure there are a lot I didn't try, but can't afford to try them all! Anyway, they all gagged me or made me nauseous...ick! Good luck finding something that works for you.

How about getting unflavored protein powder? I know unjury makes it.
You can add it to yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta and tuna.and any liquid. If you can tolerate milk sip on 4oz skim milk every 30 minutes. I like the Micellar milk, Nectar lemon tea and Matrix cookies and cream.
Feeling like you do is normal! You just had major surgery less than 2 weeks ago.
Keep you chin up!

I wouldn't be getting enough protein if it wasn't for Isopure ready to drink. It isn't bad, just a little expensive (about 3.25 here in Ohio). You get 40 grams of protein per bottle. I drink one a day. Then it's not so hard to add on. I use the unflavored Beneprotein. You can get it at Walgreens.com. Keep trying...it's really important that you get that protein, no matter how. Do you still have your g tube? You can feed yourself with proten mixes through that. Good luck.
Honestly, I haven't been counting the protein I am taking in. The surgeon and the dietician said I shouldn't need protein drinks if I did the protein first, etc. and I feel really good. I am down to one nap a day.
I have been eating the refried beans with canned chicken and cheese mixed in, scrambled egg with cheese in it, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes plain or with canned chicken mixed in, cream of potato soup with cheese in it, I can also have the canned tuna with lowfat dressing, but haven't opened up a can yet as I want to finish the can of chicken first. Takes a while with the amount we eat now. I also have a little applesause, sf puddings, pears, bananas, carrots and such.
I also go our for 3 walks at least a mile long each and I think that helps keep my energy up. I know I feel good when I do. I am up to 3 oz per meal and they want me at 4 oz. So, I'm getting there. So in those 3 ozs I have at least 2 protein only.
Wishing you lots of luck and I hope you start feeling better really soon. If you don't feel any better by tomorrow, call your doctor.
Pam
Hi,
Id suggest what I am taking is the protein shakes from Shakely products. I have a vanilla and choc and I alternate them. They are richer and creamier and more shake like than some I have tried with the gritty watery powdery taste. YUK! I had my surgery on June 20th so Wed will be 2 weeks. I am now starting to eat more solid foods. MIght be too soon but Im tolerating it well and not overdoing it. I make sure I chew the food really really well. My main problem now is trying to keep up my fluids. You just dont really feel like drinking that much really.. anyway that is waht I am working on. I had my surgery in Monterrey Mexico and I live in Arkansas. Nice to meet everyone! Andrea ( Andy)
