Can't sleep

Help! I can't seem to get any sleep. I am one week post-op RNY. I don't have much pain, just can't get comfy and settle down. I was up all night last night. finally fell asleep at 6:00am when my husband left for work (and up at 8:30 with my 3 year old). Is there any sleep aid that is ok? Called the doc today, and played phone tag. I did not think it was urgent enough to page over the weekend..... Otherwise I am beginning to feel better, down 18 pounds from pre-op visit on 6-14.

Hi Shelley, I had a few rough nites, but found that warm peppermint tea helped soothe me back to sleep. It's also great if you have tummy aches. Good luck!

One word - exercise - even if it's only walking! It helped me after I got to the point that I knew it wasn't discomfort from the surgery keeping me awake. Good luck.

I wasn't able to sleep more than 3 hours at a time for the first week. The second week I was at 4-5 hours. In the hospital I was given Benadryl to help me sleep. Try to walk around the house- it will help get out the air you were pumped up with. Rest while you can. Remember we just had major surgery! ~Jen

Man, I know exactly what you mean. I am having a heck of a time with sleep. But, I did the same thing when I quit smoking. I didn't get the sleep thing back for 2 weeks. I don't know if it is that we are sleeping so much in the hospital, we aren't doing the physical/mental activity we did before surgery, or the fact that I want a cheesecake! Not really, sort of. This is a big adjustment for us. When I was in the hospital, I was put in the suite of the lady whose name is on the hospital (Kettering, Ohio). Just luck, lots of WLS on Monday, June 18th. Mrs. Kettering had a very lovely room, with a kitchen, entertainment center, couches, recliners and 2 separate entrances. Now, when grits are the highlight of your day, a kitchen isn't much help. I wish I could have felt better so I could enjoy it. I wonder if I could just go stay there for some r & r (and grits). Deb

Same problem. My nurse said Tylenol PM is just fine to take. Stay away from any of the others. Hope you have a good night!
