You have to stop, Sandra. Don't tell them you quit when you didn't. You are putting yourself at a higher risk. You can do this. I'm a former smoker myself, so I do know how it feels. Ask for a patch or some meds to help you quit. Please.....yes, I think they can tell. Good luck sweetie.

Some surgeons do a nicotine test. Mine didn't and although I knew I should stop smoking at least 72 hours before surgery, I didn't I was having between 3-5 ciggs a day, and had none the day of. I'm not going to lie, I was scared! But something so cool happened. I got home from the hospital yesterday, and I talked to my doctor, he wrote me a prescription for Chantix, and I have been smoke free for 4 days. After surgery, you won't feel like smoking, and its a great time to quit. Good luck, sweetie. I spent the last two weeks trying to find out any info about this, but that's my story

I know my doctor found out about another one of his patients that did not quit. It was a couple days before surgery, and he told her that he would not work on her. I guess it is really up to the doctor, but do not start you new llife this way. You are doing this to stay healthy, do it for yourself. Donna K.

thanks guys, I'm really trying and i've cut down to maybe 4 or 5 a day (from 2 and 1/2 packs) and as for the gum or patch, the doc said they release nicotine so go cold turkey! its hard. keep me in your prayers. sandy

please dont have surgery smoking. i started smoking when i was 14. my dad use to through his butts down without stopping em out and i picked them up and finished them off until i was a smoker. i was scheduled april 21 to have gastric and i quit for the surgery. i didnt want to i loved to smoke.i didnt have the surgery that day. i will be 46 in july and am rescheduled for surgery august 6th. i am proud to say i have been quit 4 months and if it werent for chantix it would not have happened. my husband is a long time smoker as well he started taking them after he saw they were helping me. he has been quit 3 months. you probably would be ok if you continue to smoke. but you will have a hard time breathing. they do not do this surgery on smokers. when i had the band and it got infected and they took it out. when i was in recovery room the thingee they had me on kept buzzing off. the nurse would come over and say breath mrs. hofman. she said when the thingee goes off that means im not breathing. i coulnt breath cause i was smoking. they will take a smoking test on you and i dont think they will do it if it shows up you have been smoking. it takes approx. 4 days to pass the test. so good luck. if i can do it anyone can. i do not have willpower. the gum and patch dont work. chantix will help you not have withdrawls.

Hi sandra! I work as a diease manager Nurse for COPD and asthma. I have to day the drug Chantex is amazing! I have had numerous patients go on this medication and quit smoking quite rapidly. I had a gentleman last week so happy and proud to tell me that he was on chantex and went from 2 packs a day to a couple a day in less than a week. his quit date was monday and he was postive that he could do it. I don't know much about the medication but i can say from the reports that i am getting from my patients it sounds like a dream come true for many of them! The reason the the MD's are so adiment about not operating on patients that smoke and obese are muiltple. the main reason is that smoking creates a build up of carbion dioxide and carbon monixode this prevents oxygen from adiquately prefusing while in surgery and post op. they also find that smokers lungs are less elastic and therefore don't ventilate as well. Smokers also have a build up of mucus and secretions that are formed in the lungs. To make matters worst when opiotes are used..aka morphine..it decreases the respiratory drive. where pain will decrease the effectiveness of coughing and getting the excess mucus out of the lungs. I also forgot to mention that when we are obese anesthesia and pain medication gets stored in our fat cells. With all of this combined it increase risks for Pneumonia and blood clots. Him trying to get you toi quit is for your safety. I hope you a safe and happy journey with your surgery and best wishes to you Jamie P.s. I will see you on the losers bench! i am going in a june 26th
