Surgery on the 25th
Hello everyone I am soooooooo excited. I am trying to get all things in order before surgery. I am having a lap RNY. I have my protein powder and My vitamins here. I keep reading about the liquid diet pre op but my doctor said I didn't have to do that he don't require anyone to. I am wondering what the benefits of this is. Please any advice or recommendations on things that I might need afterwards
11 days and counting
Susan
Hello congrats on your date! My surgeon had me on a liquid diet (5 slim fast high protien or boost glucose control) a day. The benefit was that it would shrink the liver and make the lap easier. I did as he instructed, my surgery went pretty fast and I was out of recovery in no time. I also lost 13 pounds while doing it I asked him about my liver after the surgery and he said I did a great job! So I guess I made it easier for him. Anyway....being on a liquid diet kind of helped me prepare for the post op....I haven't had solid food since May 24th... I almost don't even miss it at this point, but I am still new in my post op, still on clear liquids. I get to start some full liquids this Thursday...Anyway.....take care and good luck....

Congrats on getting your date!!
I'm MY case... i'm having the Lap-Band and I'm on my pre-op diet now... in order to shrink the liver because that is the area that he will need to be working in. Now that is for Lap-Band. I'm not sure why one would or would not need to do a pre-op diet for RNY, but I'd love to know as well
Mine doesn't require a pre op liquid diet. The rationale though is that a liquid diet helps shrink your liver up. Basically my surgeon said, restrict carbs and fats and be on a losing trend. As long as you're restricting compared to what you usually eat it will keep your liver from being engorged.
He basically said that to really shrink the liver you'd have to do it for more than a month in a serious way....he said the objective of those was just to keep it from being enlarged/engorged.
I did do a liquid diet for a few days pre op just because it made me feel better. Just don't do the last meal thing and limit fats and carbs if your surgeon isn't recommending liquid diet.
I did ask my surgeon if my liver was in the way post op. He said "nope, it looked great". Like I said, for about two weeks before I really limited my carbs and fatty foods. Only did liquid diet for about two and half days pre op.
Hey Susan....CONGRATS on getting a date! You will soon be a LOSER! And let me tell you, this time is going to FLY by!
My surgeon doesn't require a liquid diet as he said it really didn't make much difference. He did ask me to do an Atkins type diet for 6 weeks because I had gained 20 lbs since my first appointment with the nurse. *quit smoking* So, I had to lose 15-20 lbs to make more room.
Keep us posted on how things progress for you....it'll be great to watch you melt!
