Gallbladder out????
Well, my gallbladder was removed years ago, so.... I don't know of anyone who had it removed when they had the surgery, but one of my firends did have to have it removed about a month after the surgery. But another friend of mine still has hers without any problems. I don't know if you must have it removed. Have you ever had gallstones? They hurt.
Sorry I can't help here....mine was removed a couple of years ago. In my paperwork from the surgeon, it says that they look it over carefully while they're in there and if they see any signs of problems, they go ahead and remove it. I think the statistic they listed is that 25% of wls patients end up having it removed within a few years after bypass surgery. I've read that some surgeons remove it no matter what...so who knows?
I don't know exact statistics, but WLS does make you more prone to having Gallbladder trouble. So general procedure is to have a ultrsound pre-surgery. If there is any sign of exsisting gallstones or problems, it is removed during the WLS. My ultrasound showed LOTS of gallstones. If approved for WLS, they will definitely take it out and seemed surprised that I haven't had m,ore trouble from it so far. That' sit for what I know about it.
My surgery is the 18th. I was told that he will not remove it unless he sees something wrong. I did have an ultrasound which was okay. Each surgeon is different. My friend's surgeon removes them all, no matter what. I did find out that my surgeon takes a liver biopsy of all patients to screen for cancers, etc. They are all so different! I know my surgeon is also VERY strict on the liquid diet before surgery. I start that on Monday...Optifast shakes! UG!
im having mine out with surgery. im having open rny and my surgeon does this because the fast weight loss causes gallbladder problems for so many.
he did explain that with an open procedure it adds 5 minutes to take the gb out, with lap rny, it can add significant time. this may be why those having lap only get it out if it is problematic.
financially, i figured it would be my luck to have the gb go out in jan 2008, new deductible and another $2,000 out the window.
wouldn't hurt to talk to your surgeon. they might not want you under anesthesia longer if your gb isn't sick yet.

My husband had his gallbladder out with his RNY. Very common to have gallbladder problems after WLS. My daughter also had RNY, but her gallbladder was removed several years prior to her RNY. I think the stats are there for post op WLS to have gallbladder problems. From what I have read it is a common practice to have the gallbladder removed during WLS.
Good luck with you journey! My husband and daughter look and feel great! My husband at 233 now and started at 350 surgery Oct 06. My daughter was 265 now 130 and a size 10 surgery Jul 05
Again, good luck!!
I wanted mine removed during my surgery (June 18th), but since my ultrasound didn't show any sludge or stones, my surgeon is opting to leave it in, which disappoints me, but I didn't argue the point with him.
I have Aetna and found a little paragraph at the very end of their weight loss surgery bulletin stating that since so many gastric bypass patients have problems with the gallbladder, Aetna will pay to have it removed at the time of surgery as a medically necessary procedure.
I'm one of those 'nip it in the bud' kinda people, so I figured might as well have it taken out then rather then later, and have to miss more time from work, but my surgeon nixed that plan. Hopefully, I'll not experience any problems with it. Time will tell...
