GOOD BAD NEWS
My son lost his home and everything in it this morning in a electrical house fire. He got a way with his life (the good news) and a pair of boxers and white t-shirt. His girl friend also has her life (also good news) and pajamas. Otherwise they've lost everything: home, furniture, clothes, purses, computer ... and have NO insurance!!!!! Kenneth's great loss was his loss of memories...He had the flag that was draped over his great uncle's (and namesake), Uncle Kenneth, casket, his grandmother's ashes and a painting she's done, and also a pillow made from shirts from his other grandmother after her death. In addition, there were many other momentos. Everything else can be replaced (eventually), but these things are irreplaceable. I AM SO HAPPY THAT THEY ARE ALIVE, but still am crying and upset. Worse yet, I am eating...Eating...EATING! We have to go shopping looking for some clothes for them...at least underwear and a couple outfits. They need toiletries too. YUK!
How horrible Cyndi. Thank God they came away with their lives. Did they suffer any smoke inhalation? It is so sad to lose those momento items. They mean so much. He might want to take the time to write down what they mean to him and describe the items. That way he can at least preserve the memory of them and not forget as time fades. Give them extra hugs and explain the virtues of insurance.

Nancy, It has been a terrible time...but we can deal...they are ALIVE and that is all that matters. We lost the trailer (we owned, but had just bought and no insurance) and our cadilac, no insurance - were starting to redo it. Son lost EVERYTHING and he was just starting out. First new furniture purchase, remodeling his home, all his personal things (MP3, cell phone, IPod, ...) as well as clothes, wallet, ID, money, and all the "normal things". His memories are the worst though. He lost all his uncle's stuff: flag that he draped over his casket, war memorials, etc. He also lost his grandmothers (both) memorials: painting one did, pillow quilted from ones blouses, lighthouses, owls, other collectables. These are irreplaceable. But the memories are in his/our hearts.
We are trying to keep our family fed, find a place for everyone to sleep, and just keep our lives in some semblance of order...
Lots of love to you. Thanks for your concern.
Cyndi
Cyndi,
We lost everything in Katrina so can understand the feeling of loss and grief. It will take some time but it sounds like he's young and so will recover. Of course it is hard on you too. How awful to lose those precious mementos of loved ones. I had paintings done by my mother too and of course all the photographs. My family, bless their hearts, put together an album for me which they all contributed to. That was one of the greatest gifts. After a tragedy like that one learns what is really important in life. Thank God they are okay. Time does heal.......eventually.
Good Luck to you all
Anna
I am so sorry I know what he is going thru. We lost our home in an electrical fire also back Jan 5, 2005. It was the most painful experience I think we have ever had to go thru. Its the little things that you miss most the little pictures my kids made me in Elementary School and my sons personal things that kind of stuff. It has been 2 years now and we are back on our feet and have replaced everything that can be replaced by money. I know its hard now but truthfully it does get easier I promise.
