I need to ask a question for a friend who had the lap-band surgery in June of this year. She's been upset all this week because she thinks she haven't loss enough weight. She has loss 31 pounds since her surgery which was in the early part of june. Please give me some feed back on this subject and I will pass it on to her. I had the RNY surgery a year ago myself and I've loss between 95 and 100 pounds. I have told her it's coming off but she can't see it. Thank you! Carolyn

I don't know how many lap-banders we have here. You might want to post to the Lap Band board. http://obesityhelp.com/forums/LapBand/a,messageboard/board_id,5359/ I think that's a pretty good loss though! Carolyn RNY 232/162/130

Hi Carolyn, I too had RNY but a friend of mine had Lap Band and it took a long time for her to loose her weight, but she did.Lap Banders tend to take much longer to loose than RNY for many reasons, most of why she most likely chose to go with Lap Band surgery instead of RNY. Tell her to hang in there it will come off but she will need to be patient, she is doing fantastic so far!! remind her that she is 31 pounds lighter than she was so it is working!! Best of Luck! Nancy

Your friend is doing fine. The first 6 - 8 weeks are considered 'healing' time. Average weight loss is like 2lb's a week. Lapbanding doesnt compare with RYN... it's a totally different surgery. I don't come in here much because most are RYN'ers and have huge weight losses and I find it discouraging, even tho I've lost nearly 50lbs since June 20. Tell her to visit the lap band forum. Lapbanders even out with RYN'ers between 3 -5 years post op according to the latest research. Has she had a fill yet? Three small meals a day.. protein first, veggies next, then carbs/fruit, lots of water and exercise. If she doesn't have access to a computer maybe you could print out some of the articles of the Lap Band Forum homepage. Just remind her it's not a race

She needs to focus on what shes lost already. If she is questioning if she is on track or not she should contact her surgeon or NUT (Im not sure of the loss of weight with lapband). If she is trying to compare herself to you she is going to be very sorry. Im sure shes struggling because she sees how much you lost in the amount of time and feels shes not doing well enough because shes lost 30lbs since june. I had RNY in June and I am down 40lbs as of this past tuesday - so I am only a little bit ahead of her with a completely different surgery. I just saw my NUT friday and she said it is VERY healthy to lost 1-2lbs a week... you keep lean muscle mass while still burning fat.... so there is a plus side to losing slower. Just tell her to keep up with whats shes doing - follow all the Dr and NUTs orders - has she had any follow ups? When I saw my NUT there were a few things she wanted me to change that would help my weight loss... the guideance is definately needed at these early stages!
