Hi everyone...I had my surgery June 12th, as of today I am down 49lbs, if we wanna round it off---we can simply call it the 50lb marker, lol I feel as if I am losing really slowly, but I guess it could be a lot worse... Has anyone tried sweets? I was a BIG sweetaholic before my surgery. I know we are not suppose to eat them at all really...I was told after the surgrey that I would "dump" if I had any and all that wonderful stuff that comes along with the surgery...well since I have been able to eat pretty much what I want, there have been one or two occasions (bday party and a wedding) where I have had a little something sweet...I had a slice of cake and 2 cookies ......now is it just me----why didnt they affect me ? I hate it,lol I want to get sick from sweets!!! I want to know---if i eat this- I will be miserable!!! Does everyone else get sick, or can u tolerate them ok?! Also, for those of u who had the open procedure.... How are you feeling? Do you have ANY pain ...Like in your insides? I have noticed that I have a slight pain where my incision is. I already think I have a hernia there (very prone to them).....Or is everyones pain gone?! Would love anyones input...ttyl

Hello Brooke, I didn't have open, my surgery was performed lap, so I can't relate to the pain in your incision.... Thank god, I don't have any pain at all associated w/ my incision's. About the sweets=> My problem pre-op was the over indulgence of sweets, so I don't care if I ever have any sweets again in life!! I have yet to try any sweets, (surgery was on 6/8) but I will occasionally have a sf cookie or sf hot chocolate--just to ease the uncontrollable urges of eating sweets--and that works for me just fine.... Just keep in mind though that this journey is a tricky one. I know many who have had wls. Some can tolerate sweets, others cannot. But the one thing I continue to hear is that each day is different, and while one day sweets may be okay to the pouch--another day it may be violently rejected--so I'd just really be careful if I were u.... Although we r nearly three months out, continue to take things one day at a time--and don't sabotage your honeymoon period by eating sweets. jmho!!

I haven't tried sugar and I'm trying hard not to. I'm treating it like an addiction and trying not not take that first bite because I'm afraid the chemicals in my brain wouldn't handle it and I wouldn't stop. I miss the hell out of them, sure. But I don't want to reopen that particular chapter of my life.

Hi Brooke! This is only me and my thinking on this subject. I have not tried anything sweet, nor do I ever want to.I don't want to know if I can have them, chances are if you know that you can......yep,you WILL fall back into old habits again, even though you can only eat a small amount it only takes a "few" small amounts of this and that to add up those fats, cals, carbs and the weight will come back.Think about it,before surgery could you just eat 2 or 3 M&M's? NEVER....This surgery is a TOOL,and we must utilize it to our best.It is about a new life eating HEALTHY foods, excercise. After going through all of this are you really willing to take a chance? is it worth it? Just my 2 cents worth.............. Nanc

Brooke, i had open rny 2 days after you, i have an occasional discomfort in the incision area or lower left, but not a lot. otherwise am feeling good. as to the sugar question, i quit sugars 2 months before my surgery and have no intentions on starting them. i really dont want to know if i dump, i do not want to allow myself the opportunity to sabotage the surgery by eating what i am not supposed to eat, what goes into my pouch is healthy and 80% protein. why would you want to introduce something that could eventually joepardize what you are trying to accomplish? just food for thought. good luck on you r journey, teri

Well, I've tried sugar a few times. Two times no reaction; one time really bad dumping. I dont' try a lot because I don't want to bring back old habits, although I can tell you that the volume I've tried is not even close to what I used to do.

Hi Brooke, I have had sweets since surgery, slippery slope I am sure. I didn't dump early on, until I had a stricture stretched. Then I think everything hit my intestines quicker and I started to dump more consistently. I will also dump on unsweetened things and stuff that has equal in it. My point I guess is that it is not usually predictable for most people. You might not have gotten sick at the wedding because the amount that hit your intestines wasn't enough to trigger a response, or maybe you had more subtle symptoms of dumping. Sometimes it can just make you tired or lethargic. You might not have noticed if you were preoccupied, having a good time. I honestly think if you believe in dumping, it will come I can relate to the incision pain. I have a one inch spot getting ropey, and that is a little sore. I also have sharp pains intermittently, that feel internal. Mostly it happens when I have over exerted myself. Just the body saying "take it easy here!" Take care, hope you are feeling better soon.
