Nauseous - is it in the mind?

Hi Everyone. I had surgery on 6/22. I am about 7 weeks out. I actually have not had any complications and I am really excited about that. I have lost 48 pounds. I was able to eat somewhat regular foods starting 2 weeks ago. Everything has been fine until this week. For some reason, during this week I have become nauseous with eating and drinking. I am lucky if I get in 8 oz of food for the entire day (and lately that has just been yogurt). I have drastically cut my water intake from 64 oz to maybe 48 oz also because of nausea. Do you think this could be a mind thing? I don't want to eat and have no desire to eat but I never had problems eating and forcing myself to eat. When I try to eat this week, I get nauseous and sometimes, I even spit the food out because it tastes so nasty. Food doesn't taste good and feeling nauseous has caused me not to want to eat or even force myself to eat. I almost feel anorexic. I am really worried because it has been about 3-4 days now that I have not been able to eat or drink well. Has anyone else had this problem when you were doing fine and then all of a sudden food doesn't taste good and you stop eating and you become nauseous when you try to eat? Any advise on what to do? I think it is more mental than medical - or at least I am hoping so. Thanks! Misty

Misty, I would call your surgeon. Not drinking will dehydrate you very fast and you don't want to deal with that. Call......... Dana P

Misty, I'm 2 days behind you and this last week I've started to have more nausea that usual. Today was especially tuff. I can still eat and I'm still sipping, so I don't think it could be a stricture. I've just been nauseated all day. Like you too, most everything that tasted pretty good, now tastes yucky.....I really can't do anything sweet. Yogurt tastes too sweet, my protein drinks are beginning to taste too sweet. I hope it's just a phase we're going thru. Hugs, Sherry

Hi Misty, I have experienced the same thing! Everything was tasting bad, and the nausea creeping is as I was eating, so you couldn't even finish. The last 2 days have been better. I did have a follow up appointment with my surgeon yesterday, and when I was discussing this problem with the nutritionist, she said that nausea is usually the result of eating too fast, or having liquid too close to the time you eat. I don't think I eat very fast, but I don't eat super slow. She said that ideally you should wait 3-minutes in between bites! Of course I don't think that is very realistic. But I don't know how that would explain the funny taste of food. I think it is just one of the many phases, and I must say that I am feeling better. I hope you are doing better soon too. Stacy

Misty, I am th same way. I get nauseous after eating and actually start dryheaving. It is so bad and I constantly think what have I done to myself. I have had a pretty rough 2 months. I have been to the hospital twice for dehydration, I lost my job for missing too many days, I've been battling urinary track infections (possibly caused by the dehydration), plus my tongue has been covered in this white stuff and nothing tastes like it should. I understand what you're going through. Its so hard because everyone just keeps yelling at me to eat and drink and no one gets that I physically can't. I hope you find out the reason you can't eat and get nauseous. I don't know if this helped but at least you know your not alone. Karen

I started getting really nausiated a few weeks ago really bad. I would also vomit all throughout the day or dry heave. My doctor told me to stop taking my Actagall meds for a while - I did and I feel much better. Also, I think the others might be right too, it's so hard sometimes to figure out these things. Hang in there! Stephanie

hello sorry to hear your having so much trouble, I started getting nausiated also while trying some new foods. I cut back down to soup and softs and it helped some, I went for my six weeks appt. and told the doc and he said that was normal when it happens cut back what your eating and see if it helps. He said also that you could be dehydrated , that would cause being nausiated and also leg cramps and alot of everything. I hope this helps , good luck.
