What am I doing wrong??
I am now 4 weeks post op and have a strong dehydration problem. I went from dring my 48 oz a day for the first two weeks to barely being able to keep 24oz. down. Water started to hit my stomach so hard that everytime I drink it I dump. I switched to milk and it helps some but I can't get past 3 to 4 8oz bottles with 1/2 of 0gram Carnation. I eat a half of toddler time baby food for lunch and the balance for dinner and I can't take anything else.
I know that I am not getting enough liquids or proteins and do not know what to do...I do not want to go in the hospital again, for the third time, for dehydration. Does't this stop me from losing weight also?
I nibble on ice chips and s/f ice pops when I can.
Looking for any suggestions.....
Thanks in advance.
P.S. I weighed in on 7/9 and had lost 22 lbs and my next weigh in is on 8/14.
Nikki,
Not to scare you but i had the same exact symptoms and finally went to the ER and ended up having an insestinal blockage. My surgeon went back in the same scars as the GBS and fixed it in a matter for 30 minutes. I feel a 1000 times better and haven't had any problems since I came back home from the hospital the second time. I am sorry you aren't feeling so well but I hope they find out what the problem is soon.

I agree with the other responses you have gotten but also.....my doctor warned me that at about 4 weeks out i might have trouble getting anything including water into me because of the scar tissue. He told me it may swell a bit and it may be tought to get anything in, and that if it continues past a few days then I need to call him. I had it happen at the worst time, last weekend I was at a three day concert, where the only thing i could get into me was water and it wouldn't go. But after about 4 days of sipping fluids (instead of my downing water 3-5 oz at a time) (I know I shouldn't be able to do that) {the doc was stunned that I can but said its ok} ...... I now am back to normal and I am on a full food diet but only half the recommended portions. I held steady at a loss of 28lbs for over 1 3/4 weeks and then dropped 3lbs in the last few days! So if it is a short term thng I would call your doc,, if it is a longer term thing I would go to emerg, nothing is harder on your whole system then dehydration!!!!!
Hi Nikki,
Sorry to hear you are feeling so badly. I can definitely relate to the physical effects, and probably to the discouragement as well. I, too, could not keep water down, and had a hard time with any food that wasn't completely liquified. I was able to eat more variety in the first 4 weeks than I could in the next 4. As it turns out, I had a small stricture that was discovered during my routine follow-up scope. Since it was stretched, my intake has improved immensely and I am now able to eat soft foods. My hydration has improved as well. Hopefully you can get someone to scope you sooner than later, and dilate you if needed. It made such a difference for me.
Best of luck to you.
Lori
