Eating Out...

I have plans to have dinner out with a couple of friends this week. I will be 3-weeks out from surgery on Wednesday, at which I am starting pureed foods. So, I can really only go out and have soup. One friend knows I have had surgery, the other does not, and I really don't plan on telling her. I was thinking of ordering French Onion Soup, and just pushing the cheese and bread to the side, and sipping the broth. I have tried canned French Onion soup this weekend to see if it would bother me, and it hasn't. Has anyone tried eating soup out?? I just don't want to go and eat it, and then get sick. Do you think French Onion is a safe bet? Has anyone else attempted soup at a restaurant? Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks! Stacy

Hi Stacy Really depends on the place you'll be eating.... I went out for lunch today hoping TGI Friday's would have chicken soup and they were out of it. So I sipped on my unsweet tea.... I later stopped by Panera Bread and ordered the Chicken Soup to go. Can't go wrong with chicken soup! If you know where you are going I would check the menu first and see what you might be able to order.... Try to find a place that has healthy options. Good luck to you!!! Laura

I would check the menu first. Cream soups like broccoli and cheese or cream of crab depending on where you are going. With the crab make sure as you are eating it that there are no pieces of shell in it. I have had both with no problems. Barbara

I had french onion soup out at a place at about 3 weeks out and it was fine. I did not have the cheese or bread, and did not eat big pieces of onion. Kristin

Stacey, I had French Onion Soup at a resturant a week and 1/2 out of surgery and I did fine. I even chewed a little of the cheese. Just make sure if you have some of the cheese you chew for a LONG time!! Good luck! Carolyn

Thanks for the reply's. I think that eating out is going to be stressful for a while. I haven't gotten sick yet, and I certainly don't want to do that in a restaurant. Stacy

French onion sounds like it should be fine. Some restaurants will even puree the soup for you so it's all smooth. The only soup I've had trouble with so far is Mexican Corn soup. I ate about a tablespoon in tiny bites and was running to the restroom in 5 minutes. Probably too much carb. Even with that problem it was over as quick as it started and I felt fine. Just didn't eat any more of the soup. I just drank my water instead.

It kinda sucks being the last one done, because I love to give my two cents, but - I can only say, have fun, good job thinking to try it in advance, and try to relax if you can! You should know pretty fast (5 min???) if you're going to dump, or anything else, right? Also - loved the idea of asking the chef to blend the soup for you!! Then you get all the chunks and their nutrition without worry of the problems!! Good luck! Tin k

Thanks for all of the replys! Just wanted to report that I did have the French Onion soup (broth only) and didn't have any problems. What a relief! Stacy
