Exercise Question

I had my rny surgery on June 15th and I'm wondering when I should start exercising. I figured as soon as my incisions healed nicely would be a good time to start. My question is for all you June babies, how long after your surgery did you wait to start exercising and what kind and how much exercise do you do? I think I'm going to start walking tonight. May not be very far, but I don't want to over do it!

From my understanding, you can walk from the get go, anything more strenuous you should have your doctors clearance for... ie weight training, swimming, stair steppers or eliptical machines etc.. I know they want you walking, walking, walking post op, but I would call for anything more then that and get a date.. hth, Tink

Hi Holly! At my 2 week post op visit on Friday,Dr.said walking, stationary cycling, gliding (I use my gazelle) only for at least 8 weeks,He said absolutely NO weights or tummy excercizing. I had Laproscopic and thought becasue I was feeling so well I could start and he said NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!! it takes 8-10 weeks for the tummy to heel. If you or anyone has had open surgery stay VERY CLEAR AWAY from tummy excercises, until your doctor says it is okay, with open you are more prone to develop a hernia. I had a friend who at 5 weeks out did not listen and landed up in the hospital for emergency surgery, and he basically had to wait another 12 weeks after to start any kind of excercise, that was a huge setback for him, needles to say he started listning to his Doc and has not gone off track! thank gawd. so try to be patient! I am dying as well to start the tummy excercises! but as they say good things come to those who wait! oh heck we have waited this long for our surgeries whats a couple more weeks? Hope this helps! Nanc

I'm still a tiny bit sore so I thought I'd give myself a good week to rest and then get started on the walking. If it doesn't rain tonight, I'm going to get started. I've been stuck for 3 days w/ no loss. I know we're not supposed to worry about the scale, and I'm not really. I just think it's time to get started on my exercise to help out that scale a little ;) Thanks for your imput!!

Hi Holly, I came home on Friday afternoon, and have already started walking several times a day for at least 10 minutes. I was told to keep that up for 2-weeks to prevent blood clots, so that is what I have been concentrating on. I am feeling well, so will probably bump up the walking while I am home and have the time. I had Laproscopic RNY, so my discharge instructions say, "you may walk, jog, ride a bike, walkup and down steps - be as physically active as you can be. Treadmills are fine. But like the other posts have said, stay away from weights or sit-ups, etc. I was told no lifting over 30 lbs as long as there is no pain. Since I am currently moving, I did test that a bit today, although didn't dare go near 30 lbs, and feel fine. I'm not looking to land back in the hospital. Sending you all my best! Stacy

Wow! Looks like I'm behind then! I walked a little tonight, probably for about 15 minutes then a storm came in and I had to haul back to the house. I'm going to start a good walking regimen first thing in the morning! I'm pumped!

I know that at my pre-op one-on-one with my Physician, she said that walk as soon and as much as I could tolerate after the surgury!! But when I asked about the gym and treadmills, she put the immediate kabash on that, saying at least 2 weeks after surgury, no treadmills, bikes, et****ill I have my post surgury check in. That occurs this Friday!! I've gone ahead an renewed my Bally's membership in anticipation!! Robyn

Walk, walk, walk although I didn't realize that didn't mean treadmills. I'm going to have to call my doctor. In Houston in the summer, I think it's more healthful to walk indoors instead of getting heat stroke. I wouldn't last 5 minutes outside.

I've been feeling relatively well and I asked my doctor at the 1 week post-op visit could I start using the stationary bike and he said if you feel strong enough but no gym visit until 1 month post-op. At present he encourages walking, stairs if able, and biking. All of this is depends on how well I feel. I've been doing the walking and house stairs but I haven't started the bike yet. We shall see tomorrow. I noticed that I still have some sore and aches around the midsection from being extremely active doing house chores and the like so i'm taking it a little bit easier now. nepo
