Dietician in Hosp
I worked really hard to have my surgery, and to get approved. I went to Dr. Hutcher for quite a few reasons. One of them is because I have a lot of complicaitons. I have Celiac (no wheat rye or barley or any items with it), I have Sjogrens Syndrom, an autoimmune disorder that attacks my glands, thus not as much saliva as a normal person etc.
The point is, I knew what I was getting in to. So the morning after Surgery the Dietition comes to question me to find out what kind of "shake" to send up that evening with my dinner. Well when she heard that I was lactose intolerate she was fine and offered me the Diabetic alternative which happens to be lactose free. I asked if it would contain nutrasweet because I do not ingest the stuff. It increases a lot of symptoms from an anxiety disorder being the number one. Then I reminded her that I was gluten free also.
This person looked at me and said "I can't imagine why you had this surgery, you'll never make it with all of these dietary changes."
I looked her right in the face and told her, that I had already made most of the changes in the diet. That not having gluten wasn't a big deal for me and that I hadn't had nutrasweet in over 10 years. (I still got nutrasweet on my tray if you can believe it) I knew it would make it difficult for her and that was the only problem.
I told her that I had already solved this problem at home, and if it was too difficult for her I'd arrange for my husband to bring in the carnation drinks I had chosen (premade but had lactose) and figure it out. Once I started talking about figuring it out without her, she finally jumped up on the ball, but what a rude thing to say to someone just out of the OR????

Let me first say that I am glad that you are home. I hope that your surgery went well and that you are feeling okay.
I am glad that you did not let this person break your spirit. Not all medical personnel have great bedside manners. It is ashame that you had to force her to do her job. I am sure that you will be able to modify your diet to fit the things that you can eat. A lot of people become lactose intolerant after surgery, I was before the surgery. Just an idea for you to try if you can : I mix AnyWhey protien powder with Dean's Easy fat free milk and a spoon of sugar free Nestle's Quik every morning. I would double check to see what things are in each product before buying them, just in case. Isopure pre mixed is also good.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. Much success to you and your new body.
