about my RNY surgery experience
Hi, all!
I had my surgery on June 2nd... and I was pretty meticulous in keeping track of what happened to me every day at the hospital. I have noticed that when people create their profiles on this site, they skip over the entire surgery/hospital experience... and that's what I was most curious about! So, I kept a diary... and finally finished typing it into my blog this evening.
If you're curious here is a link: http://carol.eponym.com/blog/CarolsBlog
My blog shows the most recent entry at the top, so you'll have to scroll down to the "June 2nd Surgery Day!!!" post and read up to today.
I hope it might help some of you prepare for what's about to happen! It was certainly life changing!!!!
huge hugs,

Hi Carol,
My surgery date is 6/16. I read your blog out of curiosity. I got to the pain part and almost backed out, but I just had to know what to expect.
So were you on a liquid diet for 4 weeks, or regular diet? Funny how different docs can be. Mine said 3 wks liquid protein pre-op diet and then 10 days post-op liquids only.
Well good luck to you. Thanks for posting!
Hugs and best wishes!

Hi!
I was on a liquid diet for two weeks... after ten days I got bronchitis and the surgeon post-poned my surgery. So, I had to do the liquid diet for two MORE weeks pre-op. That totally sucked! Imagine not eating food for four weeks! But I lost 22 lbs during the four week liquid diet, so it all worked out well.
My post-op diet is not liquid... it's pureed foods. I had the liquid diet for the first three days post op and I'm now on sugar-free "pureed" diet: pudding (with added protein), sugar free yogurt, cottage cheese, and all pureed protein (chicken, tuna, etc). I will be on this pureed diet for 15 days and then go to normal food.
During our nutrition seminar we were told that research shows the sooner our body takes in protein and goes back to "normal" foods the healthier and faster our recovery is. I am four days post-op and already counting my protein! Granted, I can't take in much and it's all mush mush mush (and I chew chew chew!)... but I understand their logic.
You're right, though.. .it's amazing how different surgeons are!
Sorry I scared you about the pain. It's NOT a painless experience! Make sure you utilize your morphine pump to the max and WALK WALK WALK! it really does help!
Why is it after you get gastric bypass you repeat repeat repeat everything three times? LOL
