I had a cat scan done last Thursday because I kept having pain on my left side under my rib cage. Well the doctor called with the results today...it appears that I have kidney stones. They have referred me to a specialist. I go tomorrow for my check up. Is this a common side effect with Bariatric Surgery?

Hi Diana, I feel your pain and I mean literally...I've had 3 kidney stone attacks since surgery in June, very painful and requiring hospitalization and mega doses of pain meds...One I had surgically removed after being admitted twice in 5 days...the other I passed while on the CAT scan machine in the hospital and woohoo, I still have another one in my kidney just hanging around waiting to cause trouble...My bypass surgeon told me kidney stones, post RNY occur in about 30% of patients...I never had one in the 38 years prior to having this surgery...Looks like you and I are 2 of the "lucky" ones...Good luck...If you get the chance to have them blasted before they cause serious pain, I say go for it... My surgeon said that was why he did not recommend protein shakes right after surgery - to avoid kidney stones. I guess it is somewhat common. ??? I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. Keep your chin up. Dawn

Hi Diana, i have dealt with kidney stones for years, had them before surgery and had them after surgery. Real pain in the butt. I have had 2 lithotripsy since surgery. Your urologist will prob have you at one point do a 24 hour urine to see what the stones are made of and figure out what is causing them. Just take it easy, dont do to much so you dont cause the stone to move, the stone moving is what is causing the pain. Drink lots of water. Did the doc say how big the stone was? SOme stones pass on their own if small enough, not a pleasant feeling, but others are big and need to be broken up so they can pass. That is what the lithotripsy is. Very simple procedure. Please let me know and feel free to email me. LisaMarie

I heard Kidney & Gall Stones are very common after a large quick weight loss. I don't have the kidney stones but I got the Gall stones. Have to have my Gall Bladder out April 10th. Just wonder how much that sucker weighs? Linda 309/191/140
