Has any had delayed dumping??
Hi all,
Got a question? Has anyone had delayed dumping. I have been experiencing this for a while now, but it has gotten worse since the fourth dilation for my stricture. I had that done the day before Christmas Eve. They dilated me out to 15mm this time in hopes that it will go down to the normal 10-12 mm. At any rate, about an hour after I eat a meal I experience sweating, palpatations, dizziness, low blood pressure and when I've checked my sugar it's pretty low too. No cramping or diarrhea (thank God).
I called my doctor's office today and spoke to the NP. She wants me to come in next week and get a bunch of blood work done. She told me to make sure I'm drinking enough between meals. I never drink with my meals and always wait at least 45 minutes before I drink following the meal. I also do not consume any sugar or even many carbs at all. She told me to try to have 6 meals of only two ounces a meal vs 3 meals of 1/2 cup. I had only about 2 oz at dinner and it seemed to help. One of my doctor friends from NYC told me to increase my sodium intake a bit so my body will hold onto the fluid I'm taking in a little better. This might help my very low bp (85/48).
I was just wondering if anyone else is or has experienced this?
Deb
Thanks so much Wendy. I talked to one my friends and collegues who is a physician specializing in endocrine problems (which I already know I have), and he also suggested that I eat smaller meals. But he also told me that I needed to add some sodium to my diet. I only have one adrenal gland (my left one was removed due to a rare tumor in 1997). It's possible I'm having problems with this adrenal not functioning properly. I have to get in touch with my endo for special testing.
Thanks so much. I will be keeping a close eye on bp this weekend, and try to water load.
I'll try to keep you all posted.
All my best, Deb
Deb,
Your blood pressure is extremely low. Is your bp consistently this low while sitting, laying down or standing? Is the doc saying anything about it? I'm just curious and concerned because back in my rescue squad days, we would have treated a patient with a bp this low for shock.
I know a couple of things that can cause the symptoms you describe:
1. Low blood volume caused by anemia or dehydration
2. Thiamine deficiency
3. Too large a dose of bp medication
There are other things I'm sure. Like, I wonder if the food is emptying from your pouch too fast for your intestine to handle, causing the dumping syndrome.....but really....but I really think the low blood pressure is a clue towards anemia or dehydration. I'm sure not a doctor though.
I'm glad they are going to do some blood work and I'm sorry you are going through this. Are you able to check your blood pressure at home? Because I care about you, I just want to suggest that you periodically check your bp each day until you get to the doctors office. If it gets any lower....please...go to urgent care or the ER. Better to be safe.... ya know?
I know you didn't ask for this kind of answer..and I hope it didn't upset you...but I just want you to be okay and not feel bad anymore.
I've only had dumping on things like watermelon or anything with more than about 8 grams of sugar, and once...a baked potato (plain). It generally hits me about 1/2 hour to an hour after eating it and lasts 1-3 hours. Except the baked potato....that one hit me in a matter of minutes.

Hi Pam,
Thank you so much for your concern and kindness. I've been having this dizziness and almost fainting thing for over a month now. I just started checking my bp when it happens and noticed that it goes really low. It's up to 89/60 tonight, and my pulse is finally down to 75. I tried to drink a lot today, got in about 68 ounces. I don't feel thirsty at all, and my urine is almost clear so I'm thinking I'm getting good fluids (who knows).
I really think that my food is leaving my pouch rather quickly. I'm going to try the smaller meals tomorrow and see if that makes a difference. My weightloss has also slowed to a near crawl, I only lost 3-4 pounds the whole month of December. Then again I had gallbladder surgery in early December.
I will let you know how I'm doing through the weekend. Thank you so much for caring.
All my best, Debra
