Foaming/Throwing Up

Yikes! I had no clue what people were talking about until Friday night. I tried salad for the first time. NOT A GOOD IDEA!!! About 10 minutes after eating I started to burp up a little bile/spit/foam. (???) It continued until I threw up a ton of clear liquid - not the salad. That was the first time I have ever thrown up since surgery. The burping continued for about 45 minutes. Too weird. It makes me gag just thinking about it. I'm guessing the lettuce caused the weird reaction. Have a lot of you experienced that too?

LOL! Yes this is the vegetable curse! Watermelon was the worst!!! Salads and cucumbers oh my! You can eat them just very small bites and chew till it is pulp! and eat ever so slowly! Wendy

Yeah! I've fought with this since starting on real food. It can be a problem with anything I eat too fast or don't chew absolutely thoroughly. It takes quite a while for the grouch to settle back down after being upset, too. When it started, I called the doc's office. They said that it's so common it has it's own name, frothing, and gave me Reglin to stop the . Reglin increases digestive activity, and causes the stuff in my grouch to go on through. About a half hour later, I'm ready to eat. Hot liquids have the same effect if I drink it 30 min. before eating. I don't use the meds too often, b/c I use this problem as a tool to remind me not to fall back into bad eating habits and taking food for granted. I have no problems with lettuce, as long as I treat it with care. It requires extra chewing b/c it will crush down and then unfold once it is in your stomach! Talk about pain and discomfort! Doc mentioned during a support group meeting that if you get too used to this, it could lead to bulimia. Not the best way to manage eating! As for me, I stay vigilant about HOW I eat, and seem to be doing quite well, if I do say so myself! I eat almost anything I crave and have had no real problems - even some birthday cake on Friday! What a treat! Good luck, Kristie

Maybe I didn't chew it well enough. It is not something I want to experience again. Nasty!

I know it wasn't a pleasant experience for you, but I have to laugh because my best friend and I chuckle everytime it happens to her. It's usually after broccoli. She eats salad like a champ--never a problem. But when she has broccoli--watch out for the foam! She will be just talking to you, and say, I've got to throw up--cough a couple of times and it's done. The warm liquids have helped her greatly with the foam. Take care and here's to no more !!!!! -Cheri

I have this problem when I eat too much/too quickly. Doesn't matter what food it is, just how fast/much I eat. I am sure you have heard this advice already, but chew until your food is consistency of puree and don't take more bites until your bite is in your tummy . . . Good luck! - Beth

I only really had issues with spinich salad. It sent me through the ringer!!! I have tried lettuce salad and had no problems at all. I just chew very well, never drink and eat at same time. I hope that all goes well for you. Renee C

Oh my yes! I ate some frui****ermelon was one of the them and I had to leave the table (at the restaurant) to go throw up. I have also had problems with raw broccoli and cauliflower (they create gas) I have to steam or cook these now. And I miss my cucumbers badly!! Slowly and as someone earlier mentioned ... chew it up into a pulp like texture. I now make sure all seeds are gone! Our local grocery store sells small organic cucs that are seedless and they are just my size. They are 5 to a pack, it is about as much as one cuc. Salads do the same for me too!! 30 chews per bite may help. I had Sirloin Steak this week and it just about killed me! Four very small bites, chewed up very well almost into a paste ... and I was still puking for two hours. The worst case yet! I will not go there again!1 My dd saw me puke and said, "Awe, mom you puke like a baby now, you spit up" She thought it was adorable ... not me! Either way, it still hurts and I get the chills or start sweating, or get the shakes very bad. I hope you feel better now. Hopefully, we will learn how to overcome the foaming stage. LoL!! Good luck to you!! Chelle'
