Hi, I am having a very, very tough time going to sleep at night, and only sleeping 5-6 hours a night at best. I know for some people this is enough, but I still feel like I need more rest. Can anyone recommend a safe medication that is doctor recommended when you have had WLS? I go backto my PCP in another week. I am trying very hard not to nap at all during the day during my recoop time, but still at 12 or 1 a.m. in the morning, I am wide awake. It is very difficult to function when you feel this way. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. I have no idea which sleeping meds are effective and safe after WLS. I don't want to sleep 12 hours a night, but I need more rest than I am getting. I will be 4 weeks post op this Thursday. Thanks for your help. Sincerely, LMW I also posted this on the main message board. Thanks.

I am by no means a Doctor but have used sleeping aids for many years. Before my surgery the 10 mg Ambien I have did not work that well. Now I just take half and sleep for 7-8 hours. After WLS the medication is alot stronger for me. It is a very small pill so it does not have to be crushed. The Doctor also prescribed one for me while I was still in the hospital. What ever medication you get prescribed--I have found them to be stronger post op. Good Luck Joni 6-27-2005 RNY

Wow, thanks for the info Joni. You gave me the information that I needed to know. I will definitely ask my PCP about Ambien. I hope it will be alright to take along with the Antigal I have to take to prevent gallstones. Also, do you find that you have to take it every night? Thanks, LMW

I am not back to work so I have tried going a few nites without it and did not sleep the entire nite. When I go back to work I have to get my sleep because my job is a mental job and I just do not think as sharp when I do not get my full nites sleep. So yes right now I am taking 1/2 every nite. There is another medication called Sonata--I am not using this one because it is a capsule and the Ambien is working out great for me.

I had the same problem at 3 weeks out. I called the doc and they told me to get Tylenol P.M. It was heavenly... I slept like a baby for 8 hours!

I like Tylenol PM. Works very well.
