OK. Had surgery on 6/6. Had RNY. Went from protein shakes to eggs, yogurt, beans, etc. in 10 days. Did fine for a few days then all of a sudden everything makes me vomit (including water sometimes). It feels like I have a ton of air in my intestines, a ton of mucous in my pouch, & then I try to put food or drink in & it just wont fit. After one or two bites I get this aweful pain between my shoulder blades, like you get when you take a pill or something that gets stuck partway down. It gets worse & worse until I get naucous(spell?) & throw up. Sometimes I throw up many times before I get enough of the mucous up that the air comes up, then I'm ok & can eat. Sometimes it takes 2 hours of struggling to get there. Does ANYONE else have anything like this going on? The dr says to stay on protein shakes until it goes away, but it has lasted more that a week. I thought it was supposed to get better???

if this has lasted more than a week and you are vomiting everything, even water sometimes, then i think it is urgent to call your doctor. all your signs seem like a stricture, from what i have read on the main message board. it is very important to keep your liquids down so you don't become dehydrated. i know it is the holiday weekend, but i would probably call the dr on call. tell them how long this has lasted. just my opinion, hope everything is ok! hugs~mary jo

I would certainly call my doctor. It does seem like you might have some kind of obstruction or really bad irritation. Maybe you should also go back on clear liquids for 24/48 hours and let your stomach settle - no protein drinks either. I would worry more about the liquids than protein at this point. My surgery was the 6th. I'm still on full liquids for two more weeks. I havent thrown up yet, but the head hunger is out of control!!!!

Your symptoms sound like a stricture, except that after you get everything purged, you CAN eat. I think if it were a stricture, food/liquids wouldn't go down even after you vomited everything else. The outlet opening would still be the same size. It makes me wonder a couple of things: Are you having regular bowel movements? If your intestines are getting backed up, it can cause a lot of distress in your pouch. If it takes you 3-4 days to have a BM, you may need to be on a stool softener. Are you taking any pills without crushing them? Pills can cause a blockage of the outlet....then after vomiting, the area can become clear, allowing you to eat/drink successfully. Has your doctor given you anything to reduce stomach acid? I know from personal experience that when the acid content is high in the stomach, the body will produce mucus as a protective measure....This is much worse when the acid reaches the esophagus. You would be surprised how much mucus the body will produce to offset or protect itself from the acid. Another point to make on this is that some patients begin having excess acid in thier pouches after wls. This can cause gastritis and worse, ulcers. If either of these conditions occur, it would cause the symptoms you are describing. When you vomit, do you notice flecks of blood or anything that resembles coffee grounds? This is very important to make note of....VERY important to tell your doctor. Lastly, Have you developed a cold or post-nasal drip? If so, you could be swallowing alot of mucus and air not even realizing it. Your doctor can tell you which allergy/cold medicine is safe to take and HOW to take it. **If you are having problems with excess mucus - milk will increase the amount of mucus you are producing. During this time, I would avoid milk** Gas-X may also relieve the air build-up. I use the chewables. ALL of this said......It is NOT, NOT, NOT good for you to be throwing up like this for a week. Make sure you answer the questions that I have listed....giving the answers to your doctor. Make sure you get a hold of him ASAP. If it is a stricture, I understand the procdure is simple, painless and quick resulted. If it is excess acid...you need to stop it NOW...before it becomes an ulcer. I'm not trying to a bossy B...but I just hate to think of someone suffering like that or getting worse when it doens't have to be that way. I wish you the best and hope you are feeling better soon. (now go call the doctor!!) (((Hugs))) Pam

Andrea, First of all, make sure your doctor and dietician are fully aware of what you are experiencing. Keep them updated on your condition, whether it improves or not! I have been struggling with nasty nausea for the last week+. It started out mostly in the mornings, but progressively spread out throughout the day. The thought of choking down a protein shake (which I did without issue for the first two weeks) is almost more than I can bear. Same goes for taking pills. The last several days I have been averaging about 300 calories, and very little protein. That said, I had my one month check ups on Friday, with both my dietician and my surgeon. They have been aware of my issues, and told me to just focus on doing the best I can. I should stick to liquids, if it helps, and just try solids as tolerated. I am taking Compazine for the nausea, and Prevacid in case it is reflux/heartburn related. It is my understanding that some of us are unfortunate enough to go through this, but that it will get better (they promised!!!). It sucks more than I can express here - I know it does. I was in tears just last night out of the sheer frustration of how sucky it is. Keep in touch with your surgeon, and hang in there. Hopefully, this will pass quickly for us both!
