Pre-surgery diet

Hi there. I'm feeling really nervous right now about my June 22 surgery. I just have a really bad feeling about it. My surgeon put me on a liquid protein diet for the 3 weeks leading up to surgery. It was really similar to the post op diet only I am allowed to have certain vegetables and 1 carb and 1 fruit per day. I'm hungry all the time! How common is that? He wanted me to lose 20-25 lbs more before my surgery. Anyway, I haven't done so well on it. I lost 10 lbs or so the first 4 days and after that nothing for 1.5 weeks. My muscles got really weak and crampy. I got discouraged during the 2nd week and more protein than was mandated. This past week I've been even more discouraged and I've eaten both more and more types of food than I was supposed to. No weight gain, just steady. Well now I'm freaked out because I didn't lose all he wanted me to. I'm afraid something will go wrong in the surgery and I'll have to have open instead of lap. Tomorrow I am going to do clear liquids only, but I'm wondering if I should just go out for my last supper tonight anyway. I know I'm just rambling here, but I just feel so apprehensive right now...

I think it sounds like your not getting enough potassium that your getting leg cramps and possibly dehydrated too. MAYBe ur docdtor should check your pottasium levels. HANG in their and do great. I had to loose 25 lbs or my surgery would be cancelled that was my surgeons rule ....NOW that im 3 weeks post op wednesday i love that i lost pre op cause you ad that to post op weight i am now down 49 lbs in all! and so happy. DO the best you can, and maybe check the potassium for help the cramping of muscles. ANd make sure u drink tons of water! thats good for you as well and dehydration has signs too .... GOOD LUCK LISA

Missy, My surgery date is July 5th and I understand the anxiety you are feeling. I am having open surgery, no lap. Someone in my doctor's office said that he wanted it that way. When you have someone work on your car you want them to open up the hood, not just look underneath. That analogy has stuck with me. I know I will be in more pain, but I feel like my doctor will be able to "see" the big picture better. I say all of that to say that not having lap. may not be the worst thing that could happen. I wish you the best of luck. I'll pray for you on the 22nd. I know you'll do well. Stay strong and only think positive. Don't even own a negative thought about your outcome. Imagine how good you will look and feel in just a few months. Hang in there! Kim

Hi, I know exactly what you are saying. I am in the same boat as you with this blasted diet. It is not going well at all. Good luck to you.
