Help - Bad Problem
Usually just lurk but I have a problem. I had a Dexas Scan last year and it was bad had one yesterday and it was way worse. I was on Forteo but could not afford the cost, my insurance would not pay so went on Boniva, been on it for a year and it is not working on me. So now back to Forteo and 650.00 a month. The question is if I eat the High Calcium food - Cheese, Milk, Beans am I going to gain weight? I eat cheese some but not the milk and beans. Guess just cut out some meat? How do I balance this. I ask Dr Warnock and he said he has faith I will figure it out. Maybe I am just stressed over this and not thinking right at the moment. Any suggestions? Please I do the Acheiv One protein but not a whole lot of calcium in it. The body only absorbs 500 mg at a time or so I am told. What would you do???? My bones are so bad I could end up in a wheel chair in a year if they keep deteriorating at the rate they are. Please any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Hugs to all and a Merry Christmas!

Deloris, you haven't said what your current or past regime for taking calcium was or is. Do you take cacium? I know you should be taking some form of chewable calcium citrate, probably 4 times a day. In addition, I do eat alot of cheese and make my protein shakes with non fat milk. I eat beans fairly often also. I don't gain weight from these but then I don't eat much in the way of carbs except vegtables. I know the fat in cheese won't be stored unless you are eating it with carbs. Hope this helps and you get your calcium back under control.
JMHO. Sara
OK I take 6 calcium capsules a day 3 at a time that totals 1000 then I drink 2 Achiev which have 25% of the daily dose which is another 500 together then the Whey has 20% then the cheese I eat and the Boniva I take they thought that would do it but it didn't. Now I am raised to 9 calcium capsules a day plus a High Calcium Diet. I am just really frustrated. Trying to get oked by the insurance is the worst. Thanks for the help.
Ok the list is now 1500mg calcium plus what I eat which is all high calcium now. One problem is you have to have 2-3 hours between 500mg for you body to absorb it. So I take 500mg in pills wait 2-3 hours and try to eat what ever is high in calcium then wait then take more pills then wait then eat again and do it most of the day, I can't eat that much. And if you have ever had like V-8 with added calcium it taste different. Guess I just have to get use to it. I need to get a menu planned and then .......... do it!
Thanks for the hug, I am just terribly frustrated with it.
I would switch to a chewable calcium. I think I read one time that if the pills don't disolve in water in 30 minutes then you are probably not absorbing them. Unless you chew them up. I know for me, I try to take all the extra precautions that I can. Just a thought. Also read that we don't absorb much from our food, so I don't even count that. Hope it helps. Keep trying. Sara
(((hug)))
I'm so sorry you are going through all of this.
I eat cheese, milk, beans, yogurt all the time and don't gain any weight. So far, I have only gained when I got stupid and did things like blueberry muffins, pumpkin pie and cookies. Yep - stupid phase. But since I've been back on track, i have a MINIMUM of two cups of milk a day - sometimes as much as 6 cups of milk in a day - I almost always have cheese and yogurt everyday - and beans maybe twice a week.
For calcium supplements (I don't count what i get from food) - I use the chewables from Bariatric Advantage - cinnamon flavored. You just let them melt in your mouth and they taste kinda like fireballs. They are YUMMY.
Because of the malabsorption - my nutritionist recommended Citrical +D 4 per day - but instead of swallowing the pill - drop one in a bottle of water and swirl until it's all disolved. It doesn't look appetizing with "chalk" floating around in it - BUT you can't taste it. She said to just keep swirling and sipping.
I remember something else about caffiene - vaguely - caffiene blocks the absorption of either calcium or Vit D.... it might be vit d.... but you need sufficient vit d to absorb calcium... I can't remember exactly how it went. But it's another thing to consider.
Please keep in touch with us on this. I know I have been slacking on my calcium lately and this has reminded me of just how important it is.
Holding you in my prayers....
Pam
