Topic: WHEW
Sorry it has been so long since my last posting. I am now 7 weeks post op and am down 32 lbs. I am so happy. It is great on this side. One very suprising thing I need to share. When I had my surgery, the doctor mentioned he found a polop on my small intestine. He was sure that it was nothing to worry about. Well at my 2 week check up. I asked about it and the doctor said I don't see the pathology report here but I assure you there is nothing to worry about. In fact this should be the last thing on your mind. At my 6 week check up, as the doctor was walking out the door, I asked him once again about my pathology report. It turns out that it was cancer! A gastrointestonal stromal tumor. I am now, at last seeing an oncologist. However, they think they got it all. These tumors do come back a great deal of the time. I will need a CT scan now and one in 6 months and then yearly thereafter. WHEW! They tell me if I had not had gastric bypass they would have never found the tumor and I would be more than likely dead in a year of so. Thank you, everyone for your encouragement that made me go ahead with the surgery. Cindy

Topic: Feeling Great
I was two months post op as of yesterday 8/10, and am feeling great. I have been off of my High Blood Pressure and diuretic medicine since my surgery since the BP has been normal and no more fat feet and ankles! My blood work was all absolutely perfect when I saw Dr. Henderson on July 10 before I left GA to come home to NC, so no more worries about Diabetes. At my appointment on 7/10 I had lost 42 pounds and I know that I am over 50 pounds lost now, but my scale still won't weigh me yet. My clothes are all getting extremely loose, and I have taken to wearing my tennies because they tie all of my shoes are so loose. Will buy a new pair of work shoes closer to the Fall. I am going to try to eat salad for the first time this week, but so far the only things that have not agreed with me are foods that had "hidden" sugar in them. I can tell immediately if my new stomach is not ready for a food I want to try, so I just stop and will try it another time. I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Dr. Henderson, his staff and the hospital in Brunswick, GA. He has told me that I am a "model patient" and even though I had the open RNY, I was out of the hospital on the second post op day instead of the third. I stayed with my oldest daughter in Brunswick and had the very best of care from her and her wonderful husband. My other children cannot believe how good I look and that is only with 50 pound gone. I am exercising to Richard Simmons tapes and working up slowly to do the full hour tapes...I know it will get easier as time goes by. Luckily I had some clothes that I had kept even though I could not wear them any more, so I have been wearing things I had not been able to get into for 5 or 6 years...yeah!! I am so glad that I made this decision and look forward to hearing from others who have or are wanting to get this procedure done. I has made such a wonderful difference in my life. I have to share a "funny" with all of you. My 5-year old granddaughter was told that Nana was going to have tummy surgery to help me get thin and feel better. About 5 days after surgery I talked to my son and he said she wanted to talk to me. When she got on the phone she said "Nana, are you thin now so we can go to the park and play?" I thought that was so cute that in her little mind I was going to be thin instantly. Anyway, I am certainly on the way to the thinner side and loving it!!! Sandy

Jennifer, I also had this problem. Week 4 I didn't lose anything so I increased the water intake and started taking water aerobics and bam.......lost 7 pounds in the 5th week. I think the amount of water you take in each day and the protein intake make all the difference. I also tried salty food for that week to help myself feel thirsty. Once you get used to the water increase it's easier to keep it up. Good Luck !!!

Dear Marilyn, Congratulations, you are doing great! I also live in Minnesota and had my surgery at Abbott Northwestern on June 9, 2003. We need to talk and exchange stories. I live in Hopkins, but I attend Greater Friendship M.B. Church in Minneapolis. Let's do a small lunch sometime. May God bless and keep you, Ivi Shaw-Epperson

I had surgery June 27, 2003. Ended up with leak in my stomach and wasn't allowed to eat by mouth for three weeks. Just this week I was given the go a head to start eating again, it has been interesting, got a little sick last night. Input and a chatting friend would be great!!

Your determination is clear in this note. Go get them and good luck with the new doctors. I had the surgery in June and it will change your life. Keep a record of all your weight loss attempts from now on. Log all your pains. The insurance company will need to see what is going on from yesterday on. They will take all into account. Good luck and keep up your spirits. God bless!!!!!!!! Val Farrell
