Topic: RE: home / now 5 days out
My surgery for the LaP Roux en Y was on May 19th. I have not taken any pain meds since they took away the pain pca 2nd day post op. That part for me was good, besides I have a very high pain tolerance and I HATE the way pain meds make me feel. I had a very hard time getting all the liquids in as I feel full all the time. I did have gas, walking and the Milacon chewables helped. Now I am having (sigh) 5 or more loose bm a day! I guess I am in the 20%-30% of folks that get this lovely side effect, fortunately my Bariatric patient education handbook says it should only last 2 weeks. I am so looking forward to being able to start to drink protien shakes and eat a bit of puree food, just need some flavor! Seven days of clear liquid diet has my taste buds craving! First post op doctor visit in the morning. My new trick to get my water down, is to use a 1 oz. medicine cup and drink that every 5 min or so. that way I do not drink too fast, and it seems to make my mind think I am drinking less but still getting it in faster. Whatever it takes! Congrats to all the new post ops, here we go on our journey !
Topic: RE: First day home
Thank you for the support, today is day 7 and doing much better. I am anxious to start to eat puree!! Never thought I would hear myself say that, giggles, but 8 days of clear liquids and I am dying for a protien shake! My dog loves the walks twice a day, he is in doggie heaven. So glad I found this site, I am really a computer person, so this is wonderful. One thing I noticed is that each medical team has different dietary progression post op. Mine is first 7 days clear liquids, 8th day start puree and protien shakes and resume vitamins for 2 weeks, then soft foods progress as tolerated. I can't really say I feel hungry, mostly missing the variety of tastes I think.

Topic: Alright- gross- but can you burp????
I am 3 days out from lap band with hiatal hernia repair- I do have some gas pains. Liquid goes down fine, but I cannot burp!!! I think there's a big bubble under my diaphragm..... Could it just be swelling? Anyone else with this problem?

I would have to say that this sounds like a good number of calories to me. I'm afraid if I eat too little, my metabolism will just shut down. And, of course, there's the spector of thin hair looming in the future..... Two hundred calories can't be enough for adequate healing, etc.....

Topic: RE: I am Home
Hi Hollywood. Welcome home! My surgery was uneventful, too, except for a big hiatal hernia, which I guess is not uncommon. Now I just want to get back to feeling normal instead of tired. Big surprise though- my doc advanced me to full liquid already! So hopefully one more week to puree. Though I'm not too hungry anyway. The Worldwide protein shakes are pretty gross.... gonna have to find some recipes. Congrats on the 2lbs!
Topic: RE: Liquid Diet
I was originally supposed to do 2 weeks of the liquid diet but I got a call from the surgeon with a date that was 3 weeks earlier than my original date. So I have been doing the liquid diet since last week on Tuesday May 19th. So far I have lost about 10 pounds which is what my surgeon required (whew, thank goodness!). My surgery is at 7:30am on Wednesday, May 27th. I can't wait!!

It is not that they are looking for the liver to be smaller. They are looking for it to be less fatty. I've been told that a fatty liver is very slippery and harder to handle. The low carb diet helps to dissolve the fat around the liver that most obese people have. So stay off the carbs.
Good luck to all with your surgeries this week. I'm right there with you.
