Which is right for me?

I am trying for the second time to get approved.  Was denied in 2006 - not medically nec - yeah right!  I have a new carrier and am going to go for it again.

I am looking for some good resources and information on which type of surgery is best for me - lap or RNY.  I am leaning toward the lap, but am afraid of it a bit since it does not have the mal absortion.  Any information you can send my way would be appreciated!

Thanks,

jk

I say go for the RNY!!!! I had RNY almost 5-months ago and LOVE IT! Best move I ever made. I originally thought lap too but reconsider b/c I didn't want a foreign object inside of me and my surgeon then said he won't even do them anymore b/c in his words "the jury is still out on the benefits over lap vs. RNY" He just wasn't happy with the results he was seeing in his patients. Nuff said for me!!!

Hope you are able to get it thru with the new carrier either way you go! Good luck!

Thanks!  The more I read about the lap band the less I want to go that route.  I've been reseaching RNY off and on for  3 years and the lap band only in the last few months.
How was your recovery?  How much time did you spend in the hospital?  back to work?

My recovery was a breeze!!! The biggest "pain" I had was gas pain from just the surgery process itself but something I wasn't told about. Lots of walking and water right after surgery is about the only thing that helps. I was in the hospital for 3-days including day of surgery. I pretty much slept the whole time and had to look at my stomach after surgery to make sure they even did anything - that's how little I felt it. Once at home it was just forcing, yes forcing, myself to eat and drink the way I was instructed. I was back to work a week after surgery but took it slow as I was still tired from the anasthesia.
Now, 5months out I've lost 71#'s and I feel its been very easy. I too wish I would've done this years ago!!!

I had an RNY May 15 and wish I had done it years ago!  I'm down 96 pounds and have had no problems.  My sister had a Lapband almost 4 years ago and has just now lost 100 pounds. Watching her I came to realize that the band would not work for me.  With the band you have to have alot of control where food is concerned and if I had that I wouldn't have been fat in the first place.
The choice is yours , of course, which type of surgery you decide on.
Best of luck,

Shelia

I had my RNY on May 28th. I has started looking into WLS back in 2005, and I was only interested in the lap band at the time. I went to a seminar, and learned about both procedures, and decided after that seminar, I definitely wanted RNY. Then I got pregnant, and once I was done nursing, I looked back into WLS, and just months later I was having it done! I am now a little over 4 months out, and down 82 pounds! I am SO glad I finally had this done!!
Oh, and the recovery wasn't bad. I was in pain right after surgery from the gas, but once that went away, I was fine. My only thing was how hot I was for about 4-6 weeks after from the anesthesia! lol

I am hoping I have the same kind of recovery that both of you had.  I had lap gall bladder surgery 2 years ago outpatient and only missed two days of work.  Other than traveling (which I'll have to avoid for a while I know) I have a desk job, so I can take it very easy.  I'm hoping I can be out a week maybe a  day or two more.

I meet with Dr. Babineau next week!  I'm ready.
