May 19 2008 Surgery
How is everyone doing? I goofed and posted this with a surgery date in April by accident. Then I posted on the May 2007 board. I am a goof.
Reasons to be grateful: I am down 25 pounds since surgery, and 48 pounds since February. Off all (5 diabetic medications), off blood pressure medication, down to 40 waist from a 44. Can wear XL shirts instead of XXL. No more snoring! Sleeping through the night without getting up to use the bathroom. My wife can reach around and hug ALL of me.http://images.obesityhelp.com/mbgraphics/emoticons/tongue.gif
Negatives: occasional nausea, can't gulp down my cold iced tea any more, am at a plateau (or stall) for the past two weeks.
How is everyone else doing?
hi John,
My surgery was May 14th. I lost 28 pounds prior to surgery. Since surgery I have lost 22 pounds - but only two in the past two weeks. I also left the hospital with no mre diabetes or high blood pressure medications. If that is all that I get out of this surgery, I will be pleased. I figure that the weight loss is an added benefit, but getting rid of diabetes was my goal.
I have dumped once and also vomitted after eating a burger. Dumping was the worst experience - I spent the next day in bed because I felt so awful.
I have a hard time drinking enough water. My pouch seems to like liquids at room temperature. Warm is also good. I have to learn to eat more slowly. I get this very uncomfortable feeling when I eat too much or too fast.
It seems as if we are in the same place.
Jayne
I sometimes don't lose anything one day, then the next the scales will show 2 pounds gone? My surgery was also on May 19th, I walk 3 miles a day , swim 2 hrs., and walk on the gazelle at least 30 mins. each night. I have lost 54lbs as of today. No more sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. I could go on for awhile I feel GREAT!! I have slowed down a little on losing as well. I do miss being able to drink down a cold glass of tea when I get hot. But other than that, I'm GREAT
Jayne & Tammy,
Sounds like we are good poster children (at least initially) for the wonderful benefits of WLS. To my surprise, this board has been a rich source of info because people share so openly about their experiences. Thanks for your responses.
I drank my liquids with ice for years. I couldn't drink anything at room temp. My pouch has rejected very cold liquids on a few occasions. This morning I hopped on the scales and had to look twice, the scale actually showed a loss of 3 pounds. I have been at a plateau for 3 weeks. I hope it is the end of this particular stall. I also weigh myself in the afternoon and I seem to weigh my lowest then. So we'll see what it says in the afternoon. I am not convinced the stall is over until I drop a few days in a row.
I also opted the RNY surgery to eliminate by diabetes. The past 15 days or so my fasting blood sugar has been averaging about 113, down from over 150 right after surgery, so I see my body is readjusting, but I am relieved to not stick a needle in my stomach twice a day any more like I did for the past five years!
Hi John,
I had my lap band surgery on May 19th as well. I am down 23 lbs and 5 inches between my waist, hips, and abdomen. I really don't feel any different than I did before my surgery. I am hungry most of the time. I am not sure if it is all in my head or what.
I am going in tomorrow to see my doctor and hopefully get my first fill. I don't have and appointment, just walking in. I have no restrictions on how much I can eat. Luckily I havent gained any weight, but I havent lost any weight in 4 weeks utill yesterday, I lost 1 pound. I go to the gym two days a week (part of my physical therapy) and walk 3 other days of the week. I have two small kids (4 & 7) and my husband is in the military, so our life can be pretty hectic.
I wish you and everyone else the best of luck!
I had my lap band surgery on May 30 and lost 20 pounds on the 2 week liquid diet pre-op. Since then I have not lost any more weight. I am scheduled for my first fill on July 10, as of now I am hungry all the time and can pretty much eat and drink whatever I please. I am hoping to notice some restriction after my fill on Thursday and hope that I start loosing some of this weight. I have questioned whether I made the right choice by going with the lap band vs. the gastric bypass.
Would love to know whether you were able to get your fill and if so, have you noticed restriction.
At my last appointment (about three weeks ago) to have an incision looked at I briefly spoke with the doctor concerning my lack of weight loss and his comment was that my job at the time was to get my body healthy after the surgery and I said "So I will start loosing after this fill, and he said sometimes it takes a few fills before restriction is noticeable. Needless to say I was very discouraged and disappointed.
Best of luck to you and would love to keep in touch with you since we are so close in surgery dates to compare and bounce things off of each other.
Hi Lisa,
I was able to get my fill last week. I can tell I have some restriction, but not a lot. My doctor put 1 cc in my band and wants me to come back the first of August to add another cc. I have lost 2 lbs since my fill, for a total of 3 lbs in one week. My doctor said he expects me to lose 1 lb a week for a total of 4 lbs a month. I was on a liquid diet the day after my fill, but now I can eat regular again.
I didnt eat right during the 4th holiday, but now it is time to get back on track. I have been tracking everything I put in my mouth and I am trying to keep myself under 1000 calories, but I seem to be struggling with my carbs. I am sick of eating chicken, tuna, and drinking protein shakes. I need to find a new way to mix up my diet. Luckily at this weeks support group our nutritionist will be giving the meeting. I am sure she can give me something to work with. I have had trouble getting all my water too. I cant seem to hold it or I am just not thirsty. My water consumption dropped from 64 oz daily to 24-40 oz daily.
I wouldnt worry too much about the lack of weight loss. Your body is probably still trying to catch up to the 20 lbs you lost, which is GREAT by the way! I know it is easier said than done. I didnt lose any weight for 4 weeks and wondered everyday if the lap band was really worth it. It got really depressing until last week and I finally lost a pound. I was so excited! Give it time and get the fill, maybe things will pick up. Keep me posted on how everything turns out.
