Band surgery 5/21 - starting over
I had lap band surgery on 5/21! I'm so excited but also a bit nervous about starting my food life all over.. There is conflicting info out there about what I can start eating when. How long am I supposed to be on clear liquid? How about cream soups? Can I have an egg anytime soon? Any suggestions from others who have gone through this first month phase would be greatly appreciated!
Tamara, my only advice to you is when it comes to stuff like this is ignore all the conflicting information you get on message boards and do what your doctor tells you. Although we are all in various stages of pre/post surgery and we all have pinions, we are not doctors and we do not know the details of your case. What works for me, what my surgeon told me to do, and what I might think is right is not what you need to be listening to. I spent forty years trying to do it my way. Now I am doing it the Doctor's way. Follow what they say, for as long as they say so. You will be eating again soon, all in time. This is not an overnight fix and the sooner you surrender to that the more successful you will be. Good luck.
Dito!!! Go by what your docs program says to do. Some ppl have to do a LD for weeks post op some only a week, etc. I had RNY and was on puree foods the first week not just strictly liquids and at 2.5wks. I am already on soft (mechanical) foods. I would say eggs are too early but again just do what your program tells you to do.
And good luck to you!!!!
hi Tamara,
There is information on the Food and Nutrition forum about what foods are generally allowed at each stage.

I am assuming that you are just excited about your your surgery and not wanting to push your system. I read about what is allowed at the next stage at least twice a day! My weight loss center gave me a notebook when I first started with all sorts of information. In there is info about each stage and a schedule of when you progress to the next stage - always after a visit to either the surgeon or nutritionist. Did they give you any such info?
I've started searching the boards for recipes for my next stage - soft foods, It is exciting!
good luck,
Jayne
Thanks for the responses! Jayne I've saved the web site you referred as a favorite. I'm finding out I didn't ask enough questions when I was in pre-op on the post op diet - guess you don't know what to ask when you don't know.
Last night the family went to Chili's and I had spinach artichoke dip for dinner (with a spoon) - avoided the chunks of stuff and tried to chew the spinach whenever I spooned it up. I ate about 10 spoon fulls over the course of an hour. I also dran****d tea with a straw throughout the meal (remembered at the end I'm not supposed to drink for a ½ hr before or 1 hr after and never with a straw). When I went to bed I felt as if my stomach was gurgling and it continued to this am - feels like it needs to go somewhere but I'm not sure where that is! No vomiting since the surgery though so I'm guessing that's a good thing! Guessing the milk in the dip and the air from the straw combined were bad from what I'm reading now. Back to protein shakes and broth today!!! Hope I didn't cause the band to slip.
