1st Dumping Syndrome experience
So, I believe I now know what they mean by the "dumping" syndrome. I tried a Boost High Protein shake yesterday, drank 1/2 of the 8oz. bottle and within minutes I felt sick to my tiny little stomach. Then the sweating and the nauseau set in, it was awful. It did pass but I just took some anti-nauseau medication I had and went to bed. Think it lasted about an hour total but it was not fun. Too much sugar in the shake? It did have 27g of sugar per serving.
So I won't be drinking those anytime soon! But what else can I try for protein shakes then? I am having a hard time getting my required protein in. All I am eating 6-days post op is yogurt w/ no sugar added and my 1/4 a tray of my Pureed meals each time, which has chicken in it. Hmmmmmm....
Last nights epi has made me a bit leary to move on to Phase 2 of the diet next week though, but I am anxious to have more variety in my food.
Hi Kristy
Sorry to hear about your episode. That must have felt awful. The sugar amount is very high. I use a high protein, low carb protein shake mix. You can purchase these at Walmart in the pharmacy area, also Cost co carries one variety, I think. Health Food stores carry protein drinks as well. I'm not sure what surgery you had, but I am 9 days out (RNY) and am only allowed 30 mls per 15 mins. Did you drink too much at once as well as have too much sugar? I was also told to make sure my protein drinks had 20 to 30 grams of protein per drink. The protein is very important.
Hope you get it all figured out. Good luck.

Omg, 27g? Yeah, thats WAY too much sugar. I'm not supposed to even look at anything that has over 10g per serving. So yeah, I would say to not have anything like that anymore. Did your nut not give you a sugar gram limit? You also have to look at things like sugar alcohol as well, it will cause dumping too.
Hi Sharon
I had RNY may 2 and although I am not hungry physically, sometimes the "mental" hunger is worse. I will be fine and then all of a sudden, I just feel like having something to eat. Maybe it was from all the snacking I used to do. For a couple of days, I felt pretty depressed, it was like losing your best friend. In a couple of days I felt better and back on track. I am sure I will go through some more bad times missing "my best friend" (food).
I had asked a couple of people on OH and they said they got back into some of their old hobbies and found other ways to keep busy.
Good Luck

Oh man I am so not looking forward to my first dumping syndrome experiance... my Dr. told us we could only do Boost Glucose Control for diabetics. Maybe you can exchange it. The Boost I had was pretty good and settled well. I am so glad my diet advanced today... no more yucky shakes except if I don't get enough proteins in during my meals... I'll let you all know how my first dumping issue goes... we all will go through it adventually...
