I am just curious as I know several ppl that had the surgery 3yrs. ago, both open and laprascopic, and they never had to do this liquid diet. I know that surgeon's learn new and better ways to do this surgery as time goes on and they do more and why we are doing it (to shrink the liver)...but I'm wondering who out there doesn't have to do this except fore maybe a day or two before surgery?

Hey Girl, Actually my Dr didn't want me to do anything. They said I was fine with eating a t-bone the day before surgery as long as it was before 12am on May 7th lol HOWEVER I'm a nurse and I know that that in itself might be pushing it. So I put myself on the diet I would be on post operative and the night before surgery I'm going to do a bowel prep also. I just want to make SURE my pipes are clean and ok to be rerouted So I guess u could say I'm putting myself through misery w/o really having too.. .. aren't I the weird one The only thing my surgeons gave me was a betadine scrub and a sterile pee cup for a pregnancy test the morning of surgery. Do you have to take a shower and scrub w/ betadine before surgery?? I can understand the shower, but I figured they'd scrub me w/ betadine on the table! lol

OK, NEVER have I though I would want or need to ask someone this but... How do you do a bowel prep? What IS a bowel prep exactly? And can I do it myself at home? I wonder why surgeons are so darn different. Some ppl have been put on this diet for a month, some a few weeks, some not at all??? I'm only a week but that's because my surgeon's nurse screwed up and couldn't read the calendar so I got out of a whole week. However, the PA said I didn't have as much weight to lose as others so I should be fine. I only need to lose a good 100# but I'm hoping for 115#.

As far as I know, her referring to bowel prep- is taking laxatives before surgery so all the "crap" is out of your system. I had to drink some realllllllly nasty stuff before a colonoscopy once... I hated it. If you don't have to go that route- I suggest not doing it for the hell of it. I can't recall the name of it- but it sure gets every last lil bit out of you!

Yeah what Mary said. It's not a fun thing at all, but I just want to make sure everything is ok and I'm clean in that area. . .

My Doc requires only 48 hours prior. His nurse said this helps shrink the liver which helps the surgery. I also have to shower the morning of and use an anti-bacterial soap on my abdomen. 62 hours to go WOOHOO! You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

My doc doesn't require anything until the day before. Just clear liquids that day and bowel prep. I am having surgery this Thursday. I am glad you posted your question because I have beent thinking the same thoughts, so many people are on a preop 2 week liquid diet. Kelly

Only thing I am required to do is have 2 Tablespoons of Milk of Magnesia the day before. No liquid diet for me. Nicol

My surgeon and dietician requires a two week diet prep that calls for NO GRAINS. 6-8 ounces of protein, unlimited non-starch veg., 2-3 servings of fruit, 3 servings of milk group, eating 3 meals, with 3 protein shakes spaced between. The day before a full breakfast, then clear liquids with the bowel prep the rest of the day.
