I posted this over on the RNY board...thought some of you may appreciate this. I was a bit shocked when I read the results of the research that just came out relating to death rates of gastric bypass patients. It stated that there is very little difference between the surgery patients and those who do not have the surgery when comparing the year immediately following surgery. At first I thought, "How can this be?" Then it started to make more sense after I gave it considerably more thought. Both statistics are about .53%, which equates to one death in about every 200 patients. While the statistic is higher for the gastric bypass patient during that same month including and immediately following the surgery, it continues to go down very dramatically during the following 11 months. For the non gastric bypass person, their chance of death remains the same through the 12 months and both groups meet at an interesting point of equalibrium by the end of that same year. After that first year, the death rates of the two test groups seem to dramatically diverge away from each other, depending on how much success the WLS patient has been able to experience. I know that this was posted earlier today on another thread, but here is the MSN link below. http://health.msn.com/dietfitness/articlepage.aspx?cp-docume ntid=100168341>1=10316 Wow, what an eye opener...very fascinating. This new finding kind of blows that old myth out of the water of how dangerous it really is to have surgery. Now it shows that it is JUST as dangerous NOT to have surgery. John
