Constipation Question

In the beginning did any of you have to use a laxative, suppository whatever so you could go? I only went once on my own, the day after I came home from the hospital. Now I am not able to go unless I use something. Surgeon said this is normal because I am not eating as much food and if I notice I havent gone for like 3 days or so to use something. So I usually use a suppository every 3 days or so if I notice I haven't gone. Just curious if others needed that extra "oomph" in the beginning LOL. I am hoping once I am on solid foods more that I will just be going on my own. I don't want to have to keep using something because is that dangerous? Kali

The first week, I was on only clear liquids and so I felt like I was in the bathroom all the time. Since I started full liquids Wednesday (milk, cream soups, cream of wheat, sf pudding, etc.), I hadn't gone so I started taking Benefiber. I'm going to make it a habit to chew 1 or half a day just to keep things regular at least for now. I have no desire to get constipated right after I had my intestines and stomach cut and rearranged. Good luck! M.

I have been having the same problem. Milk of Magnesia is what I have been taking and I was told it doesn't cause dependency aka I wont have to use it to go every time like a laxative. It sucks and tastes bad but gets the job done without me living in the bathroom. This is all part of the "game" so hang in there and whatever you have to do just do P.S. How did your dinner go? I posted right away but didn't hit submit the 2nd time and so it was sitting here when I came back to the computer lol Sorry Rebecca

Hi Rebecca, just realized you had your surgery the same day as me! Glad to see I am not the only one needing help when it comes to the BM's LOL. And my dinner actually did go well, I ordered that salad minus the lettuce and bacon, and just asked them to give me extra shrimp and pieces of hardboiled egg. I tolerated it just fine, and I have leftovers probably for a few more meals so that is always a plus. I put the dressing on the side, I dipped a little but it was spicy so I didn't really use it. There were little pieces of black olives, and little halve sliced mini tomatoes but I didn't touch those becaus I am not sure if I am allowed to have them at this point. Especially with the seeds in the tomatoes. Kali

Kali, I had the bypass on 5/7/07 and one of the things that has helped me especially while on narcotics(that constipate) I would take 2 stool softeners a day. This has really helped.

Okay I'll join in. Sometimes it's a couple days between BM's. I don't like it all. I have been chewing three of the benefiber chewables but that's not really making it all that regular. Sooo I'm not sure what I'm going to try next. Patti

Boy, I am so glad that I am not the only one. Usually it is 3 days between, I haven't taken anything yet, but I am getting ready to. My stomach usually will be achy for a day before I go. I also had a hernia repair, so that made my stomach even worse. I thought with my period starting a few days ago, that I would go more often, but no such luck. Well good luck to you. Michele

Michele, did you have the hernia repaired during your RNY or was it a hernia after surgery that you had to go back in for? Kali
