Food Ideas?
Hi Everyone,
I had my open RNY on May 9th, so I am 4 weeks post op. I've been on pureed/soft since I left the hospital so my surgeon said I can finally start eating some normal foods. Have any of you began the transition to normal food? I am so nervous to start trying new things. And I guess I am just looking for ideas on what to have. I made a tilapia filet last night which was good and I tolerated it extremely well. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Kali
Hi Kali,
Just go slow and try one new thing at a time. I had my surgery on the 8th. I tried toast that was bad but then crackers were ok. Chicken breast chewed all to bits was delicious today and I ended up eating too much Tuna with fat free mayo was yuck but tuna with salsa was yummy. I also like the Amy's frozen meals the stuffed shells has 22G protein per entree but you can't eat them all at one meal. I've thrown up a couple times since moving in some new foods but for some reason throwing up isn't as bad as it was before the surgery. Maybe because there are no gastric juices in it.
Good Luck,
Patti
wow your meal plan moves fast!I had my surgery on the 7th, I spent a week on liquids then moved to full liquids( soups, cream of wheat etc.) for a week and a half then puree for a week. I today for the first time ate food that wasnt mushy, and BOY was it good. I had a low fat cheese stick with a peice of deli turkey wraped around it and some left over cooked squash. The cheese had 10 gms of protein and the turkey had 7.I thought that was pretty good for one meal. Also ham salad with low fat mayo on a peice of toast for supper, i mixed some protein powder in the salad and it was very good also. Hope this helps some!
I had my surgery 9 days ago and just got moved to full liquids and tomorrow I get to start pureeds and have to stick with pureeds until a month post op.
However, when I'm in your shoes, I have visions of shrimp skewers marianated with olive oil, soy sauce and seasoning on the grill. Mmmm! I hear seafood goes down relatively well - easier then red meats but I guess we'll see. I've also heard of people making a chicken salad with canned chicken, FF mayo, finely chopped celery and onion, walnuts and even some put cranberries in it but I'd leave those out. You can make scrambled eggs and sausage, refried beans with mozz cheese. I have heard of low carb pizza where you get a low carb/low fat tortilla and put some pizza sauce on it and sprinkle cheese and meat on top and bake at 350 until crisp. I think the recipe said to bake the tortilla for a couple minutes first then add the toppings. You can probably eat about half and save the rest for later. I saw low carb low fat tortillas at the deli at my grocery store so I plan on trying that for sure! The possibilities are endless!
Good luck,
Michelle
Kali,
Make sure to not wait too long to eat......try every 2 hrs. When I first went on food....... I got so hungry I ate too fast........That doesn't work well!! LOL
Also, eat slowly ....even putting down the fork or spoon between and waiting a bit for your new tummy to adjust. I started with cottage cheese.........I eeven mixed it into some scrambled eggs and it made them so much softer and great!! I added sliced tomatoes to the CC after a bit............... Then it was tuna salad. I made with light mayo and boiled eggs............ that was good and I ate with tomatoes, also. The tilapia is a great choice. I bake mine on a rack. Spray with a dab of butter flavored canola oil and seasoning. Cheese sticks are good, also and LF yogurts. (check the carbs on these............under 20 for sure or get low carb versions. You can cook veggies, like caulif, broccoli, green beans, summer squash....even pulse them a bit in a blender to start............. All tastes great to me!!
Best of luck,
Karen
